bertram e nightingale chronicles of ginger farm written specially for mo free proa by gwendoline p clarke bank of canada stock twenty teaks ago from the issue of tlie free press of thursday september 24th 1934 the schools big field day was a decided success bright warm weather prevailed and there was a large attend ance the splendid amount of 4000 has been spent on actons streets this year as a result largely of reeve hynds per sonal interest we have fine approaches and streets superior to those of most towns of actons size there was a splendid list of exhibits at the opening of acton fall fair turnips are coming in freely about ten cars have been shipped from acton the price this week is 12 cents per bushel sunday was the hottest day in the month eighty in the shade on the 20th of september ite large the only member of the acton contingent who went to valcartier was not permitted to remain with the regiment and arrived home on friday the medical examiner did not pass him pte large had served during the south african war w coles writes from valcartier to the free press a good many changes have taken place since writing last sergeants and corporals have been re duced to lower ranks with the excep uon of pte a large all have passed the final medical exam they had the pleasure of meeting h r h the duke of conhaugnt the acton men were felling trees when the duke rode up and inquired of pte wills where we were from acton sir seeing south african ribbons on pte coles he asked what regiment he had served with then with a cheery good luck men he rode on they are wondering how much longer they have to stay there and hope the order to move on comes soon one is sometimes tempted to wonder whether it pays to use uptodate methods in doing things for anyone who has raised chickens knows very well all the fads and fancies which suppos edly have ito he considered if one wishes to raise a healthy flock and how even with the best of care ones plans will sometimes go awry what makes me wonder this is because i notice one sometimes gets the same results with very different methods for instance about six weeks ago we had three hens walk out with little chickens broods of four five and eight respectively as soon as daughter saw them she wanted me to shut the chick ens up and look after them no i said they are too late hatched to be anjfgood unless we use them for broilers later on if the hens can raise them all right jf they cant then that will be all right too and so i left them died stone at the family residence john street acton on sunday september 20th 1914 mary rachel daughter of the late richard stone asthma is torture no one who hasnt gasped for breath in the power of asthma knows what such suffering is thou sands do know however from experi ence how immeasurable is the relief provided by that marvellous prepara tion dr j d kelloggs asthma rem edy for years it has been relieving the most- severe cases if you are a sufferer do not delay a day in securing this remedy from your druggist canadian gypsum to britain the first large shipment of crude gypsum to leave canada for the british markets cleared for london during the week of june 21st these shipments are the forerunners of regular loadings to the markets of the united kingdom where the crude gypsum will be employ ed in the manufacture of all lines of gypsum products for the british trade an astonishingbain in the product tion of gypsum in canada was made in april when the output reached a total alone now in the spring i buy chickstarter meal for six weeks then growing meal and chlckslze scratch grain until they are half grown but for these chicks i did not put out any feed at all they have lived on just what the mother hens could pick up during the day and at feeding time and yet if youll believe me these chicks have grown faster and better than the ones i fed and looked after so well in the spring the hens with five and four havent lost a chick but the one with eight got five chickens drowned in the milk trough and isnt it much the same way with children those who have the most care and attention often require the most medical attention while those who are left to themselves and just grow seem to thrive and flourish like young weeds do we for instance fuss too much over our children what do you think of this little story one day during the holidays i4ookd outside and there i saw two little boys one of whom i recognized as a little chap who used to live near us who but had since moved to the city well these two little chaps the eldest was only eleven had hitchhiked from the city a matter of twentyfive miles i thought at first they had run off on their own but each one had a lunch with him which his mother had packed and they assured me their mothers had given their consent to the trip provid ing they started back at fourthirty and how are you going to get back i asked oh i gues well get a ride and supposing you dont guess well have to walk thats all have you got any money oh yes arts got a cent in ht poc ket returned bob at four oclock i called them m for a lunch although they assuied me they were not hungry and had some or their own lunch left at fourthirty they staited off two little chaps with short legs and high hopes i hated to see them go and i wondered attthe evening if they got home all right two weeks later to try surprise they showed up again a truck driver draw ing logs had given them a ride nearly all the way right to our very gate and promised to toot his horn on his return trip about three oclock this he did and they ran off as happy and inde pendent as two little animals of course i would never dream of let ting our boy go off like that but yet i cant help but wonder which is- the of 25483 tons as compared with 48881 better way the thing is one is afraid tons in the preceding month and 4241 to take chances these little lads were tons in april 1933 during the first very well behaved they were not in the four months of 1934 the canadian out- least mischievous or overventuresome but totalled 36983 tons which represent ed an increase of 23428 tons or 172 8 per cent over the 13555 tons produced in the corresponding period of 1933 extensive deposits of gypsum occur in the vicinity of chcticamp on the gulf of st lawrence and also on the opposite side of north cape peninsula at dlny- wall on atlantic tidewater in victoria county nova scotia both deposits are easily quarried and both arc favorably located to shipping facilities painless and perfect in their action millers worm powders are always a safe and reliable remedy for children who show symptoms of worms these symp toms are easily recognizable in a fever ish restlessness frequently ending in convulsions a point of notable im portance is that after millers worm powders have cxpeled the worms the stomach and bowels are toned up into a very healthy condition shares of the bank of canada to the amount of 5000000 carved in linden wood and are bllghtly more than life size they com pile a considerable number of figures which include the twelve apostles a few saints peasant women and even a figure representing the former lord of the manor who is seen with his arm linked through that of a soldier comrade ah of the statues arc hollow and each one of them is atoeehlve openings in the backs of the insures providing for the entrance and exits ofvthe honeygathei ing insects the recortjs of the manor show that the first of thewooden statues was put in place in the year 160c but they certainly were healthy and sturdy and acquiring an independence of spirit which would stand them in good stead later on in a competitive world ive raised the question but i cant supply the answer but at any rate it will give you mothers something to think about just as it did me this afternoon daughter and i made a trip to the bush and there we found very definite signs of autumn under the trees the ground was strewn with beechnuts and acorns fences and underbrush were gay with golden rod and wild asters and the hawthorn trees were bright with berries here and there were maples with crimson leaves and patches of poison ivy appeared like red scatter rugs on the floor of the bush it wa all very beautiful but to my n ay nf thinking there is a sadness and innlity abrut autumn that one does not find at my other seison of the yeai coniriir across one of the melds we got mltd up with a bunch of young heifers rnd cilves belonging to one of our neflbors there wee about twenty of thim and thy would persist in shawnee oklahoma frederick e murphy publisher of the minneapolis tribune says i oneroiythe great sustaining forces of business during the past five years has been persistent intelligent advertising backed up by energetic sales effort these same prosperity twins right now are proving to be the most reliable factors in business recovery under the new deal the reason is simply that advertising and salesmanship have been proved time and again to be both potent and effective in creating rapid and continuous turnover which is only a short and enlightening term for describing the exchange of mer chandise or service for cash and the crea tion of profits and payrolls even in the face of tremendous efforts in washington to bring back pros perity business itself can help the cause along by putting back to work its greatest salesman advertising on full time its hours of work are not limited by any codes and it speaks a language that inspires and lifts up the downhearted the power of advertising to build prosperity is proved by a survey made by the advertising federation of america covering the 17year record of 120 corpor ations sixty of them annually increased their advertising appropriations in spite of depressions at an average rate of 16 per cent over each previous year many of these firms were small but today every one of them is numbered among the foremost of america they have multiplied their net assets to f our times what they were 17 years before their combined net profits in one of our reeentycars of depression were three times greater than in the comparatively good year of 1915 g t hodges former president of the federation says this dramatic but truthful testimony to the value of an un broken advertising policy should bring confidence and inspiration to executives who want tangible proof that a courage ous program even in difficult times will pay handsomely at acton going east dally except sunday 1007 am dally except sunday 612 pjn
