of pro hibiting parking on mill street at certain hours for somo time however this has been allowed and seems to meet with general favor but now problem arises now cars arc parked on both sides of mill street and quite often trucks or buses make double line so that one way traffic is all that is pcrmissable this creates dangerous condition and is liable to result in accidents of course bylaw prohibits such double parking but perhaps it would be well to use sign or some means of bringing this to the attention of motorists va new speed limit goes into effect net month and there are many who will use it up to its limitations it would seem that parking regulations will need to be made for certain hours on alii street to conform with the changed highway regulations statistics that very interesting book the annual report of municipal statistics came to hand during the past week although the figures given are for 1935 these volumes are always round interesting cspecj ially ir compared with reports of the year previous this year another pamphlet giving summary of the amendments to the municipal and school laws accompanied the book some splendid informationj is given in very concise form and the only regret table part is that the distribution of this informa tion could not be wider there are no end of interesting articles that miglit be writtcntfrom thes books qfmjlttirariil statistic but it is necessary to curtail the comment locally for the timo the population of acton in 1935 showed gain of about 100 over the figures of 1031 acton is the largest village in group which comprises those of under 2000 population six municiptilties retain the status of villages al though their populations are over the 2000 there are thirtyjsix municipalities classed as towns whose assessed population is under the 2000 mark actons assessed acreage is 394 acres and the persons per acre is the per capita debt is 7735 which seems to compare very favorably with other municipalities of similar size in looking at halton county figures we find that the population is about evenly divided between the towns and the townships of the county the town ship total is 13081 and the towns and villages 13400 the assessment of the townships is how ever double that of the towns in coronation year there are many worthy arrangements being plan tied for coronation day and it is splendid to note that among them will be the pluming of trees at the public school grounds two ucorns from england will be planted it is said it takes un hundrced years for an acorn to develop into fully grown oak we have always been appreciative of the foresight of those of earlier years in their effort to plant trees if these acorns develop into oaks there are mifrry of this day and generation who will derive their ap preciation of coronation year from such sentences as the abovei written in 2037 why not plunt as well number of maples nt the west end of acton park some of the trees planted thirty years ago arc now beautiful but un fortunately not all of them survived that section near the point could be made beautiful in few years if row of maples were placed along the edge of the race course and many of those who are now living would get some real enjoyment of this deed commemorative of the coronation of king george vi such decoration would be of very per manent nature and not expensive scho the sunday school lesson rot sunday afkit 13uj i3j7 editorial notes there are chaps who can tell you that it is just fifteen days until theend of april and the opening of the trout fishing season the road repairs are now being made and the road drag is doing very effective work in repairing some of the damage done this spring the police board has backed chief draper in his enforcement of sunday laws newspaper heading snys mayor robbins silent well thats some thing actons observance of coronation day is to be planned for next week be loyal citizen and help plan and take part in this event in your own com munity municipalities view the limited privilege of fixing beverage room hours as no great favor many of them would have liked the opportunity of prohibit ing their opening what about canadian independence canadians generally will appreciate the firm stand taken by premier hepburn in his dealing with the strike situation in oshawa he made it quite clear that law and order would be enforced nego tiations with canadian labor groups can always be easily carried on but when agitators from other countries attempt to dictate the policy in canada the firmness that is admired was forthcoming from ontarios premier we cannot help being critical of the laxity of ottawa and immigration officials in allowing these agitators into canada there arc none who have crossed the border but have become accustomed to the searching questions and ofttimes inconvenience they have undergone when making entry from one country to another and yet men whose methods are known to create disturbance for thousands of canadians are allowed entry into canada what ottawa lacked ontario has made up and premier hepburn has refused to negotiate uith the united states oflicials number of years ago the editor was member ol the international typo graphical inn its in hue nee in canada as to large degree lessened striken but it seems that oulv individual eperience cm settle these questions in the minds of workers wc 11 not arguing the ciena ul motors side of the question or that ot th workers in this instance hut ue do believe it is poor rellection on the intelligence of c1111d11n work men that the are led about like sheep bv thesj ugitators from the united st lies perhaps modified re enactment cf the boston tea purty episode might not be amiss and would at least he impressive of the fact that canada can at tend to its own dihiculties in its own way certainly the dominion should have no desire to emulate the example of lubor difficulties and their settlement that is given by our southern neighbors wage cuts have been restored to civil servants and will be restored to railway workers in twelve months its not such difficult task when the public purse is back of it and the echoes of hockey fade gwny into the cheers of baseball its really great to have climate that above all things provides for diver sity of sport amusement queer how one section of the highway through acton was promptly cleared of the winters accum mulation of sand but the other on the east still re mains hus the department no general ruling for the removal of this accumulation some improvements can best be made now if you cant afford them better enquire about the homj improvement plan and take advantage of its offer to supply the tunds prices are advancing and the work can he done now most economically emblem bill in the ontario parliament on march 22nd 1937 the white trillium botanic ully known as trillium granditlorum now becomes the legal floral emblem cf the province ontario has been slow in dealing with the question of provincial flouer emblem for the ontario horticul tural association has consistently urged consideration of the subject for the past 20 years and the efforts of its officers and members have at last been auarded by the legalization or the uhlte trilllum which was adopted at their suggestion as matter of fact no province of canada has eyer shown any great haste in the selection of floral emblem in nova scotia in 1825 the question was first mooted but it war not until 1001 that the trailing arbutus locally known as the may flower was legally adopted in the following year manitoba made official selection of the wind flower and later on alberta chose the wild hose us its floral emblem tile wild rase is also the floral badge of iowa and the prairie wild rose represemi north dakota it is also 20 years ago that the on tario horticultural association discussed the question of flora emblem for the dominion and althou the tnjhatlvc fcla4tf is delicious of the association led to consideration of the suuject by horticultural societies universities and other institutions throughout the dominion no final de cision was arrived at the maple leaf his been accepted by the people of canada without legal instrument or public proclamation as their emblem nnj has thus been accorded fixed place along with the rose the thistle sham rock and leek of the peoples of the british lsles the rose is also the floral emblem of new york state while uell known national emblems appear in the pleurdells of france the linden germany the amaranth of swedvm the
