drew a crowd that vu within twenty person of the highest record set here writing this article as president of this years fair and in close touch with all departments z can assure all that every officer is very grateful for the outcome in view of the elroumstanoes that were raced one of the finest exhibits of horses were shown that has ever been seen at acton fair the sheep were of splendid quality and the comment by the judge of thla department was that they were the finest exhibit he had presided over in some time all breeds except the jersey cattle were well represented in the cattle section the exhibit of hogs was good although the number of this class as wen as that of poultry was perhaps not as large as has been seen in the hall the exhibits were well up and made a splendid showing the two new departments the women i institute and histo b were features that drew a great deal of favorable bom- ment gplendld exhibits of grain were- shown but the entries were not numerous vegetables classes on the new display benches were attractive and much ad mired apples and other fruit were well represented and of good quality the home baking class and canned goods were also the subject of much favorable comment a good showing of plants and cut flowers was made the ladles work de partment was well filled and much new work was shown and a number of new exhibitors carried off prist in this de partment fine and decorative arts and children work hsd good exhibits and brought up their section of the hall in the women s institute exhibits there were six cxhiblu and this new sec- sjbllltles of creating a great deal of in terest another new feature was the historical exhibit here too is a department that has shown great possibilities of develop ment this year the collection was re fer a beginning spinning wheels clocks centuries old old coins photographs and variety without number of articles were exhibited a collection of firearms owned by mr geo brando of ancaster included rwrj thing from the old flint lucks down through the years to present lime and also lnclud ed revolvers and pistols it hu keenl inspected and admired there was ut prise mone awarded appeared and with trained dogs goats and pony put on three acts that pleased the fair board regretted very much that causes beyond their control made this change ti and they were unable to fill the program as advertised it did not m up to what was anticipated la the original booking whan eight or ten men attempted to captured the animal picked it up bodily and deposited the 136 tbs of squealing pork back to the crate the foot race had as winners j kemp- ahead georgetown r brldgman and r wlldfong both of h r no 9 rock- the high jumping hones gave splen did exhibitions and the winners were both from the stable of ii m dell of lambton mills the musical chairs and potato race were both events that created thasajnjl amohnt of fun and excitement they were keenly contested w thompson won the musical chairs contest and the potato rsce prizes went to w thompson a devereaux and j b devereaux a perfect day with not a cloud in the sky blessed the second day of acton fair smiles vied with the sunshine in brilliance and from early morn until long after dark the fair ground was a scene of great activity the parade of schol children was can celled and this interfered with entries in the de orated vehicles betty bauer won the price for decorated doll carriage and vernon agnew for decorated bicycle pall ant s float was also an attractive entry and took the prise offered in this class on behair of the fair board the pre sident o a dills welcomed the crowd to the fair in the opening ceremonies he pointed out that success was due to the hearty cooperation of all and ex pressed appreciation for the splendid help that had been accorded by all mr r j kerr first vice president of the ontario pairs association then introduced mr j a carroll superin tendent or ontario fairs and exhibitions association mr carroll had visited about the fair grounds prior to address ing the visitors he paid fitting tribute to the untiring activity and ability of mr b j kerr in promoting acton fair and the a orx of fairs generally he noted many improvements that had been made since his last visit to acton there was improvement in showing of stock for judging consideration for the safety of spectators and evidence of planning and preparation for the fair he congratulated the exhibitors on the hall exhibit and especially in the ladles work department he approved the plan pf having exhibitors names on the ar ticles displayed his comment on the midway was that it waa one of the clean est of any fair he visited and did not have one objectionable feature and lastly he complimented all on selecting such a splendid day for a fair mr carroll then officially declared the acton fair of 1037 open from then on the fair went into ac tion superintendent of the field r j kerr and his
