there is yifllcfcnt affnirs to occupy your attention irf the provincial field at all times without any deep concern over dominion matters remembrance next mondn is ntmcmbrancc day a d ly whose significance lies in the fact that it marked the close of another war- just twenty two years ago a war that we nil professed to hope was a war lu end wars but some place in those twenty i two years we have failed and so as we ohserve j remembrance day in i 140 we do it amid the same scenes that wc did in 191 i to l i for that reason remembrance day this car has n different significance from twenty one others that i have been observed another world war has been raging for over a year with no indication that it will be a short one the lessons which we hoped would be remembered from the other great war were apparently not learned in the light of e penenecs gained in the past war the present is being fought in a different way both on the battle and home fronts may wc in the light of experiences in years of peace rumemher and gain by these c penenecs so that those living twenty or more years from now will not be experiencing an of her world conflict remembrance day is next monday in the midst of another war rt is pleasant to remember that other battles were fought other days were dark and in other years peace and victory seemed a long way off but the ictory did come and the struggle did end we did have twenty one remembrance days i observed in a peace time atmosphere and they will come again what no hockey while wc as well as every other citizen of acton and district believe that every effort should be made above all things else to win the war still wc think that it ts not in the best interests to lose sight entirely of peacetime pursuits and the period follow ing the close of the war it is generally conceded that the arena in acton especially the big ice surface has no particular ad vantage for training the local militia other quar ters could be secured that would be better suited in view of this wc think it n mistake not to carry on with the arena and hockey in acton this year tor ten years acton has built up a reputation for being a hockey centre there have been our juvenile junior intermediate arid rural leagues one of them climbed up to a championship during that period are the results of all this ten years of building to be lost in one year we hope not perhaps the program will have to be curtailed a little but we think it wise to carry on we note that other towns are organizing some of them who have not had a club in years previous the boys of other fiockey teams arc not with us many ot last year s teams arc in the army but we think they would all want to see those who are still in acton carry on the sport during thctr absence hie tide ih swinging i he tide of battle that seemed to take a turn a month or two ago in favor of creat britain continues on its upswing from nations joining with germany and others submitting to domination by the axis powers wc find now a stand being taken and such a stand that it is causing italy and germany some real difficulty greece is not being trampled underfoot by the italian hlirkreig in fact the italians ai c ac cording to reports suffering severe reverse just uhy hitler coupled up with the italians who have proven so useless is one of the things uc suppose will not be known until after the war is over the strength that britain is showing will give more encouragement to the smaller nations to resist the invader w c may well anticipate that the rush to get under the hitler swastika is about over and we will see more mi i n ns taking sides with great britain the battle is not over it will take yeais yet to jnt down the wir machine that germany has ercat ed it will take the energy of every one who desires to sec democracy survive if ou can t help on tile battle front y ou can help on the homc front and even if it is just the purchase of war savings stamps your bit will contribute to the cause editorial notes we may get more of it but if wc don t most folk will agree that indian summer did conic this lull lxtiihe our wonderment ontario s iralhe toll continues to mount and on
