t eenla fr a 1 mutd m4 k use troopa have what it lakes that final battle for tunis and biiertc with its concentrated attack of planes tanks and infantry is something that brings a thrill in every story re leased about it the final attack was the climax to a great many months of preparation and of weary to iles of pursuing the enemy across the desert you cant help but admire an army or group of men who still have it in them the will and ability to de liver a knockout blow after such a gruelling test of cu durance right here in acton and district weve had two weeks of a bit of a tuslc to meet an objective for the fourth victory loan it was the biggest am ount ever tackled but it was tackled with a flying start and a persistency that deserve a victory as we write this item on tuesday we are still making pro gress but the grade gets steeper as the top gets closer this district and most parts of halton are making a fine effort to obtain the objective now were poised ready for the knockout blow just a few more sales and a place will be earned that marks accomplishment of our objective those forces over in front of tunis and bizerto had what it takes to give the knockout blow and remember they gave it several weeks ahead of schedule when the boys come homo again with their vic tories behind them we can hardly afford to let it be said that we failed to raiso the amount requested to meet their needs for equipment this county this district has never failed and it must keep faith with those who face the k we are expected to give that knockout blow to the fourth victory loan this week lets not be behind schedule the country doctor the problem of medical service for canadian rural communities is becomfng so serious in at least one province saskatchewan the canadian procurement board has announced that it is not approving any more enlistments ofmcdical men fronj rural point where the doctors servicer arc essential in maintain- medical care for civilian the number of younger doctors joining the mili tary services has necessarily thrown a heavier bur den on civilian practitioners many remaining are older men who must miss the assistance of th younger graduates who have been schooled in the latest techniques und treatments thus the oppor tunity to learn by association is temporarily suspend ed it is nutural of course that the younger doctors tshould engage in the research and jrxpertence that war opens to medicine and surgery for medical men can turn the waste of war into achievement their discoveries are of untold benefit during the conflict and for timeo come at a time when maintenance of good health is u fundamental requisite for increased production tre mendous demands are made upon skilled advice and treatment for the restoration of sick and injured civilians this rs the burden laid on the diminishing number of available medical men in canada but country doctors do not minister to their communities physical needs only problems of a confidential nature come to them common sense and psychological advice are as much a part of their healing as pills and plasters they often provide leadership in matters of municipal concern their kindliness and patriotism are an example to all let us give honor where honor is due to the country doctors whose skill experience time and sympathies are devoted without atint to the service rectly associated wilh deing and dry cleaning but not including laundries baths guide service shoe shining the procedure under the order is that it now becomes obligatory for every man in an age and marital clas designed under mobilization regula tions engaged in one of the industries or occupa tions specified in the ministers order to make ap plication to the nearest employment and selective service office not later than may 19th if there ii no higher priority work available for the man he will be given a special permit to entitle him to con tinue on a temporary basis in his old employment on the other- hand if it appears necessary in the in terest of the war effort that the man be moved to more essential employment he will be given a direc tion to some such employment w each man who can calj personally at an employ ment and selective service office must do so a man so far removed from an office that he can not call will be required to write the office and wait further direction the age groups under the order arc every man born from 1017 to 1924 and who has reached 10 years of age regardless of whether mar ried og single and every man born from 1002 to 10ig who on july 15th 1040 was unmarried divorced or judicially separated or was then a widower with out children all men in these age groups regard less of their medical classifications must report v willi everybody helping well win looking over the returns now coming in from the district on the fourth victory loan one cannot help but be impressed with the number of applica tions received this of course indicates that every one is taking a share of the load in that way suc cess has been achieved in the past and in that way again success wilt come in this fourth victory loan reports from industries show splendid returns with nearly all of the local plants having already reached their quotas and indications that the others will before the close finish their task it takes a lot or 50 or 100 bonds to make a total or 225000 just 4500 of the former and 2250 of the later it means approximately a 100 bond for every man woman and child in this district it means that some one has to take up extra for those who are not earn ing but in a community way each is taking all the share of the loan that is possible in that spirit we cannot fail this week is the week to finish the task remember the campaign in north africa i ahead of schedule we cannot afford to be behind schedule the boys st the front arc waiting for the results we hope next week to tell them that halton and every district in halton has come through again v editorial notes you drink your weight in water each month but are you pulling your weight in victory bonds v shovelling coal and cutting grass all in the same weeks home chores is just overlapping a bit too much v r n browns farm fields seem to get more and more popular for forced landings by training planes its remarkable how hospitality news travels around among the airforce v again there is much speculation this week on when the second blitz bomb in the victory loan will explode in acton much thankfulness too that it is of the harmless variety v mothers day last sunday saw tribute given in many ways to mothers living and to mothers mem ory both visible and unseen each in his own way with surely none neglectful v it is our duty to hand on to our children a world in which may utter be directed to alternative employ ment such men are not at prestbit being compuuorlly directed to alternative employment but where enlaced in law priority industries they are be- i iic encouraged to take high priority vtork the diversity of opinions expressed before the national war labor hoard upon the principle of collective bar- calnlne nnd the possible abrogation by canadian provinces of some of their powers in labor administration indicates the complexity of the in quiry which the board is conducting lnlo labor relations in the dominion many hoaaesuon eifiht regional labor boards so far had presented suggestions the manitoba board has recommended that the government make its war time wage policy mandatory the al berta board on the other hand feels that the government lacks an ade quate labor and manpower policy the provincial labor ministers hon l d cunic or nova scotia and hon peter ifeenah of ontario with the canadian chamber of commerce en dorsed collective bargaining hut the canadian manufacturers association has indicated its opposition to any uc tion making collective bargaining compulsory mr currlcs suggestion that the provinces transfer to the dominion government some of their present ad ministrative powers in labor matters has been countered by the utatomait of adam bell deputy minister of labor for british columbia that his government opposes the suggestion that collective bargaining and con ciliation matters be centred in ot tawa jobs for women a grease monkey b c housewife says its fun working in garage uompers
