shw tn sttt press sixtyninth year no 22 acton ontario thursday november 25th l net four homeprint pages five ceott former acton boy tells ol landing operation in italy ttie following interesting letter wm received from cnl w hector mac donald eon of mrs awx macdonald csmrch street who is with american army in italy and has been passed for publication by the army censors we know that it will be read with in terest first hand account of the invasion from an acton boy somewhere in italy mr arlof dills publisher acraar fata pass acton ontario canada dear ariof when i last saw you in november you told me to drop you a few lines if anything of interest came alone in my travels it was my lot to be in the advance outfit of american troops that invaded the european continent for the first time in this war the assault on italy alone with the british troops we were the first to land in the salerno sector this letter la betas sent through the chief base censor and if it passes censorship i must caution you in the event that part of it win be published no chances whatsoever may be made from that which has passed our mil itary censorship regulation are he ld and rightly so much has been written about p day and h hour but it was my first ex perience with either d day of cour se refers to the day of action and h hour is when the troops actually land minus is for the days before and plus for the days after much of the actual times etc must be omitted for military reasons hut these mental notes may give you an idea of the before hours we first have a dress rehearsal a full invasion practice with all equip ment somewhere in north africa the array term for this is the cow- puncher on d day we board transports at an unnamed african port and after being sealed in maps are brought out and we are briefed in our muslnn a period of time here is skipped on dl we are now passing sicily where in the growing darkness can be seen the towering mountains on the shoreline a grim reminder of recent events earlier we are joined by n giant convoy h hour is thursday september oth 1043 h10 hours we have a well-pre- pared dinner of roast beef the navy really eats at minus nine hours while on duty in the troop office the flash comes to the navy of the sur render of italy and fifteen minutes later the news is on the ships radio frdrn algiers much jubilation and the tenseness seems gone at minus 8 hours the american commander speaks to all troops and warns of over optimism and that operations would proceed according to plan later we learn he was very much right prom 8 minus to 4 minus final preparations and adjustments are made at 4 minus ve had a hearty breakfast after eating all troops with equip ment go on deck as we pass through mined waters at minus 3 hours we are detected by enemy aircraft who attack the left wing of our convoy with vigor antiaircraft and tracer bullets make a wlerd but beautiful sight but i fall asleep and mus most of the fireworks no casualties in men or ships as we have nn abund ance of protection at h minus hours we start disem barking into assault boats down rope ladders and to a rendezvous of all boots inourwftve the navy is al ready shelling the const a fascinat ing sight the schedule is set that the first troops will step on shore nt exnrtk 00 its about that time now just enough left for the runin we hit the beach my third contin ent in less than six months it is rather hot for the jerries rme a aero on the beach but uckh most of the artillery u falling a trifle to our right we push on in the moat part the rest must be left unsaid for the present but as has been written me did have some vigorous action our lines bent but never broke and in a few days the situation was well in hand some of the articles you may have been read ing were probably written by a famed new york newspaper reporter who splashed off just behind me holding his typewriter high above his head speaking of the british there were none of us who dldnt say a little prayer for the fabulous eighth army who were racing up the coast to meet us to step on the fu right now we are doing splendidly and i am feeling fine ater a bit of a raat wannest personal regards w h macdonald weekly war commentary br fbank uwe aw rm mmm wrtur financial statement shows acton in splendid condition n mt s lilu ulik while cheering the feats of the alexanders montgomerys mountbat- lens of this war spare m salute for the quiet civilians of the british for eign office who appear to have won the battle of turkey it was a long tedious fight staged in the uninspiring atmosphere of con ference rooms and against the intang ible but deadly enemies of intrigue and rumor but the recent news that u has apparently been won with turkey on the verge of entering the war against the axis gives the unit ed nations a victory that may well rank with any military achievement to date it was primarily a victory for those little known men from the british foreign office who under the direc tion of glamorous but canny anthony eden have made britains diplomatic corps as feared as a mechanized army camouflaged by the old tradition that britain merely muddles through the machinations of the corps during ihe war has been a headache to the germans since dunkerque at that time it kept the fight going by swing ing to an apparently beaten country britain the support of the neutral world since that time it has followed and in many cases as with turkey pre ceded the armed forces along the road lo victory diplosnatle victory the war these diplomats waged to swing turkey traditionally an ally of germany oer to the allied camp started in the days when things look ed darkest for britain and her allies at first the victories won in confer ence rooms against germanys crafty fran von papen were few hut of late they have increased until how they appear lo have swept the held por announcement by the hard- headed and cautious turks that all aid short of total war such as the united states extended britain before the jaiancsc forced her into the con flict was being given the allies was an unmistakable sign of where tur key stands coming as it did just when britain was suffering another setback in the aegean it was also a boost for united nations morale and a slap in the face of littler and that it should come juit then was proof positive that britains diplomats are top men in europes most powerful and strategic neutral country a feature of last weeks fighting on other than the diplomatic fronts wu the raid of nearly 1000 b a f and b c a p planes on berlin and ludwlgshavcn when a total of 2500 long ions of explosives were hurled on the nazi capital alone neutral re ports said chaos reigned in berlin as a result of tne raid as the raids on germany by both british and american planes contin ued to reach hew heights majgen william e kepner chief of the unit ed states 8th air forces fighter com mand declared that now we have only to increase our bombers and supporting tighter proportionately and concentrate against heavy indus try for germany to crumble he sold the allies had defeated the strategy of the german high com mand in the air canadian airmen during the week also took part in the wars fifth raid on leverkuscn a chemical centre six miles north of cologne where poison en components nrey manufactured ludw igshaven is the home of the worlds largest chemical centre russian setback meanwhile the russians suffered their most serious setback of ihe 1041 campaign when they had to abandon zhitomir important lenlngrad-odcs- sji hallway junction which they had taken from the germans only a few das preousl the retreat was or dered apparently when it was found impossible to reinforce troops holding the place however the red armv offset the reverse with a surprue drive ncro the dnieper river to the gates of cherkasl and the capture of ovruch 25 miles north of korosten cherkasl is midway between kiev and dne propetrovsk the drive against cheraskl gave additional support to the russians left flank against reinforced enemy units and brought new threats of en circlement to german forces in that salient also the russians said the loss of zhitomir did not reopen rail communications between the german armies in the ukraine and white rus sia ovruch just south of the white russian border was the fourth big germanheld stronghold captured by the red army in six days in the crimea rumanian divisions attached to the german army were reported to have begun evacuation continued on pag three report of work
