ukalil ed ihiimu oeu falaer day sunday sunday u father day without a doubt not a widely observed or at sentimental ai mothrra day but apparently crowing some in popularity the ob aarvsnee doesnt run at much to flower at it does to practical gifta for father hut then father he ing what they are the practical aide ahould be stress led more moat father will argue that such a day la un necessary but a small practical gift doea at a rule help to defeat that inferiority complci that may have hung over from an elaborate remembrance of methera day and reestablish him in the household aa a part and parcel necessary to the average home it doesnj require great gifts for fathers day but perhaps a note of warning should be given that the gifts should be appropriate to fatbera age tics net too boisterous or the socks not too glaring we mention this because we have recentlty seen some of the window displays in cities but of course local mores will have much better judgment in helping yeu select the gifts when editors confer last week we spent a couple of days at a news paper convention in london it was the first post war gathering and it was also the first day of real rammer wt have been attending such gatherings quite regularly for several years and naturally have come to know many of the editors of newspapers in the province that acquaintanceship gives such af faire something of the reunion thrill as well as the opportunity for learning more about the newspaper business and hearing outstanding speakers discuss national problems such events are usually busy days from the time breakfast is over there is a program arranged that take in the daytime hour and usually until about ten oclock in the evening after that there is borne time to see the business section of the city and visit with editors who though living cloae one may not meet between such gatherings this postifar convention was different in one respect there were many of the young men back again at their newspap er duties after years of service in the armed forces their contribution to the conference gitve a balance that many of us editors who were past the scrice age required and their influence in the das of peacetime reconstruction is bound to be felt the shop talk of the conference would not prove interesting to our readers although much of it mj become part uf this newspaper but such gatherings do bring a better understanding of the problems of other parts and do much to bring promccs and their j peoplerinto greater unit perhaps in this respevt they accomplish their greatest good to organise a society or the protection of that dying institution the bather shop quartet if canadians are ashamed of their voices their shame is not justified the opera and ceaeert stages have more thaitjheir share of canadian singers and aew talent is constantly being discovered by music teachers schools snd radio stations but we have coma to look upon sieging aa a profession rather than a means of relaxation end decline to compete with the esperts unless we have voices to match theirs even children naturally less selfconscious are soon tsught thst they should be seen and not heard and spontaneous musical eapresalon is squelched by silent disapprovsl of their elders perhaps most canadians do not know whst they are missing their own singing may not alack up against paul uobesons but it can provide entertain ment that la just as enjoyable and not nearly as ex pensive all that is needed is the ability to carry a simple tune and to relax slate of the world a husband at irmed bitterly intu his den t all the wives i could have picked he fumed then ins cc fell on a newspaper clipping senl to him lt a friend why not try a new life before a new wife he read if conditions are unbearable at home perhaps you arc the bear and if two people can t learn lo live together and like it what hope have wc for the world a two billion something broke inside the man me went back into the room where his wife was mutely sitting i am really sorry he said when self interest in two people strain marital relations they will break their legal union fast enough the married state alone does not hold them together hut common loyalty to the ideals of mar nage snd of whst h can mean to the world and de mocracy will help the matth survive when sixty different national intereata strain in ternational relationa the legal union of an organned world state will not hold them together it will take wholehearted loyalty to some great common ideal one nation one world indivisible with liberty and justice for all this really could be made the state of the world if inspired in other countries by s people who enioy this state themselves by a nation indivisible be cause it is made up of indivisible families tree be cause through common loyalty they have found 11 possible to trust each other just because they live to give instead of grab here are the foundations for a world state held together by bonds stronger than any treaties or laws lets spread hit more canadians should live well out in the sub urbs on lots of at least an acre g d conant told a toronto audience the other day the former ontar 10 premier and attorney general marshalled some strong arguments to support this suggestion with ss per cent of our population concentrated in urban aress and the proportion rapidly increasing we risk tremendous civilian slaughter in the advent of an other war family life would be more normal and should be healthier if the population waa dispersed over wider areas with big gardens snd perhaps some livestock the citizen would be more secure and independent any one of tne reasons sdvsnced by mr consnt is sufficient alone to warrant careful study of hes proposal he suggests thst such a study be con ducted by a royal commission composed of town planners economists transportation experts eng incers agriculturists etc v engineering development of the last 2s years especially in the way of good roads power distribut ion water supply and sewage disposal now make it possible for urban people to spread out aside alto gethcr trom the defense angle decentralization has enormous economic advantages instead of half a gether from ttfe defense angle decentralization has better off happier and more stable if our population was more evenly distributed v at woo rouor freedom with which the average persons tends to burst into song if wc can believe hollywood in its more musical moods any telegraph boy or business executive buffeted by n unkind fate or simply en- joying a fine technicolor spring day will probably give vent to his feelings in a pleasing bsntone possibly the reallife counterpart of thia type of celluloid character exists perhaps he plies his mel odious trade on the canals of venice the psmpas of the argentine or the steppes of russis but he is conspicuously absent from the anglosaxon world it may be one of the drawbacks of a scientific age that the average canadian prefers his music readymade by experts snd declines to do his own singing except in his bathtub or infrequently from the anonymous shadow surrounding a summer camp bre he will raise bis voice lustily enough in a church choir or community song est but seldom for u own pleasure it has even been found necessary discussing the countrys labor troubles and strikes one local
