provincial and dominion fields can go in an emergency r ni recollections ol acton 3oroi5tfotctop 86w of lbcrj hwvy we can never and the explanation for news paper offices becoming the depositing place for items of local interest and historical bits last week we had two requests for help in getting material for historical sketches one of them was for an item that had been mrtlstd six year ago and some relics we didnt mow were in our possession were turned up in thtf search for the missing item hut not the miaainff copy for instance we came upon a copy of the hilton journal dated augtfet 3rd ir51 this was apparently the predecessor of the canadian champion since it was about this date that the champion was established the journal was edited by john jacques and our old copy is in a remarkable good state of preservation the leading editorial in this issue is headed the municipal corruptiomsts try to defend them aetves and the column length article uses some strong ords the second article a tempest in a tea pot also deals with municipal affairs of the county and some personalities the other historical find was an ohj band record book dating back to 1874 and giving the finances of acton rraw band when the caretaker rseied 10c per night for lighting fires and lamps and cleaning the hall these are only two of the historical items c found and wc know that most ccr wcekl newspaper office has like we hae many more items and records here and there that are invaluable to the community and arc perhaps just as well pre seaed as if in a local museum but not sctn as often by the geneial publu vc get man requests to help in historical matter e often wish for space to allow folks access to these reconds and to see the old ne paper file at their leisure wc regret that so often wc hac not the time to secure all the information asked but it does seem to keep one busy each week to stay abreast of current local events wc do appreciate the care that was taken b our predecessors m the newspaper fields in preserving files and historical items and we do our best to hand down our take in good condition fach eek files are carefully kept and each year are bound the local news paer provides perhaps the best sources for local history and those ho seek this informs tion the barne txamtner in an editorial last week deplore the adverse publicity that the town and arena management suffered by the action of some fans at a hockey game the local paper points out that the report on the incident that appeared in toronto papers was to say the least greatly enlarged aa a matter of fact the incident was not much more undignt fled than those that occur in the maple leaf gardens regularly readers in rural sections have come to regard toronto news reports with a critical and often unbelieving eye they are usually more than a little overdone but the fact remains that a few fans by their behaviour at a hockey game can tpvc a community a very bad name most every town has these rowtlics there are as a rule only a few of them thcy make it unpleasant for th majority vra attend th gamaur they k sport a bad name and will eventually kill it they give their town a bad reputation we expect player to hold tempt nt in the heat of contest it will be a k thirty fur all rports whin these rowdie urc barred f corn- arenas and at the hrst mlii ol tmube niitkinc at any gatm they should he landed in a con vement snowhank and allowed in tool iff advertising that dora no4 pay in brockvillc rcccntfy vt illiam donald mc y tavish pleaded guilty to charges of theft by canadian towns every now and then clip local merchants for sizeable amounts of hard earned ensh and then flit gaily on to the next town and a new collection of victims that advertising pavs has been proved time nnd time again but it is questionable in deed whether there is value to the merchant in the tpc of advertising sold by slick and suave visitor here uho represent little known or far distant newspapers and periodicals or else unfold some intricate but glowing scheme it can happen here and it is ell to make careful inquiry before putting cash in unknown media and with strange salesmen kditor1al notes profit fftrtii there is a tendency these days to blame the admittedly high cost of living on prohts made bv large corporations this is a trick used by left wingers ho know the average citizen finds little time to read annual statements from in dustnal concerns et one large enterprise has issued an an nual report that is impressively simple anil can be read at least the imporant parts by anyone who can read the sports pages or comic sections this company a flour milling concern says tt has heard criticism that the high price of flour and flour products including bread can he traced to their profits so without con f us ing the issue in any way the report state were we to sell a 7lb bag of flour at no profit at all we would be able to reduce our price to the wholesaler by less than one cent per bag furthermore if we eliminated ourpxoflt on the flour wesell to baker the reduction in the cost of producing a loaf of bread voqld be tecs than onetenth of a
