dominion of canada for national thanksgiv ing i rnotv ihan a holiday or a feast day although the majority might claim the holiday or featt day as the greater element history records that the day was instituted by the pilgrim fathers in 1621 to celebrate the first harvest in the new world no doubt the hardships of those early pioneers settling in a new world impressed them with the fact that providence had played a real part in providing the harvest and the food nocrs ary for living over the long winter perhaps this machine and scientific age of today has made us all fect differently but har vest and seed time are ust as much in the care and guidance of the almighty today as in 1621 life is easier but life and the need for thanks giving in 1949 have the same basic fundamentals as in 1621 monday is thanksgiving day a special day in which all the nation gives thanks if your thanks have been intermittent or entirely neglec ted on the other 364 days you can t make up tor it in one day but all can in this land of plenty make monday next a day for giving thanks a community turn the annual fair in acton has come and gone for another year and the 1949 event has scored another success a fair or any other community event can only be successful when it has hearty piactical backing by the whole community and district the fair board is not a closed corpora tion we know that many of the officials who have worked faithfully for years would welcome an opportunity to retire and have their places filled by other public spirited citizens we know these directors would willingly help new men to peta start in this interesting work but whether you re on the fair board or not you can help for instance the y s men s club volunteered this year to arrange for members to attend the admission gates that was indeed an appreciated offer by the fair directors and taken up at once we know of many others who said sure when asked to help and thereby contnbu ted to success the fair of 1913 has expanded a lot until 1919 it takes a community effort to make it a success as long as the fair is an affair of the whole community and district it will continue to progress it provides a great opportunity for town and country to work as a team it s a com mumty team that should never be allowed to disband j stat farming in two days mail from the united states de partment of agriculture last week no less than 9 out of 17 pieces received dealt with price and production controls one can well imagine what the fathers of the present generation of american farmers would have thought of this sort of thing from their national government comments the financial pott for a country which prides itself as the avprld s foremost upholder of private enterprise this flood of orders from washington seems strangely out of place the fact is of course that apioncan agriculture is now so hamstrung with fjinvwrnmwnl rflnlafmn that thn inhniihnal fr- mer has mightly little to say about what he will or will not grow and even less of xvhat he will sell if canadian farmers would like ro know where this trend toward state marketing leads they should get their names pyt on the official mailing list of the american do partment of agri culture to read all the directives they will then receive will leave ijttle time between morning end evening chores but it may save them from pehng strangled in the same sort of red tape jhat powsedevlls their follow workers in the united fttfl z v ftr pvntia wk fire prevention week has been officially proclaimed for tke week of october 9th to oc tober 15th you may ask how can i do anything m this week to prevent fires you can do plenty ty cleaning up rubbish in homes or shops make it a rule to be careful with matches and in your smoking habits if you smoke in bed discon tmue the habit special attention can be given to heating equipment and having the chimneys and all pipes properly cleaned don t dump hot ashes and use only metal receptacles for all ashes use care with your electrical appliances and always be sure to turn these off before leaving the home or office oil burning equipment should be care fully checked by competent mechanics clear up cily mops or dusters and be careful with flimsy decorations there are many ways in which everyone can he an active participant in fire prevention week a little prevention now may save some loss and inconvenience in the winter it s quite appro priate that fire prevention should have a week s thought before the winter season comes autumn olery enhanced we ve revelled many a time in the autumn rrlory that seemed to be at every hand along the highway between acton and milton many a t mfc we wondered if putting through the new road and taking out some of the dangerous turves would detract from the scenic beauty of this drive well it s autumn again and the road allow ance has been altered the curves eliminated and the shrubbery trimmed back and the drive is more beautiful than ever not ust a glimpse is presented of hat scene from the mountain which seems to encompass the whole of south ern halton for a quarter of a mile you can drive along and take in this view that is always inspir mg no matter how often you drive tho road when the lookout is gravelled and finished we predict it will be a popular spot for sight seers the other day we got another new view over tc the west where apparently a few trees cleared have brought into prominence a wooded section rt splendent in autumn glory and reaching into a valley beyond the end of the escarpment saturday we met halton s genial member of tl e legislature stan hall and that no 25 high way has been at least a topic of common interest between us for some years mr hall asked us how w liked the prospects for the new road we said splendid and we mean it and we think a word of appreciation is due halton s member tor his interest in the northern part of the riding md his effort to make this connecting link of ontario highways standard it will be a happy day for both of us when it s paved and finished czioloc51folfctoco recollections ol aclon cziorz3foczf51folf back in 1899 taka front lit
