armntic and quit flqhfing ach other for twentyone yean four year ago after ttx yeart of itruggle irmi were again laid down remembrance day recalli the sacrifice of lives lott in thoie two world wan and ch com m unity on that day or a sunday cloie to the date remembert those who paid the supreme sacri fice remembrance is a good thing but in remem bering the tacnfice and the folly of fighting it would be well to make the experience of ihe past a living resolution to do all we can as mdi viduals to avoid a repitition of the error of wars the way of force in this present day of enlighten ment should bo a thing of the past there are urely better ways of settling our differences than by a mighty struggle that leaves all those who participate exhausted and smuggling for existence it might be well to remember this remem b ranee week that wars have no nruu that those who have been sacrificed can never be replaced that we will each endeavour jo liv at peace with our m ighbour and with the world at large we each owe bs1 55 almost 63 millions has been lopped off the net debt of canada since the end of last year according to a return tabled in the com mom the other day from a htgh point of 17 1 billions in september 1946 the total has now been reduced to 11 495 881 920 but even that substantially reduced figure represents quite a tidy debt for 13 5 million canadians it amounts to 851 55 for every man woman and child in this country financial post getting back to normal the announcement of the removal of rent controls is no sooner made than notice s given of another round of wage increases and a de n and for lower cost houses and government intervention one of the bad after fleets of the war is the weakness left in individuals itttr bi ing cored for by qcnirnmimit rrqi ai oris the inability to smnj alone perhaps vol c in iu ill ho we il delist i these regulations when they were first put into tffiht is a war nicimm it took t no to rji t i sod to them md since tit tt i j im i to th m f i now t ikin i mot t me to qet ulj th m put rid of th m we nu st qet and tht sotmi r we qt t away horn trust tistum i i reqi i it oris and stand on our own tt tht sooner v i come in actual rocowr gowrnmtni handling oi labor problems has not boon an more successful than any other method never have we hevd so many foolish strikes and slow down of prodtc tion as smte the government started to regulate hours mix m disputes and cause dissatisfact on with both parties this is especially true when agreements are disregirded and law is not en forced perhaps if governments would revert to thetr role of enforcing law and order and get out of nuiiness of which they know nothing we would reach the ultimate goal of better relations be tween labor and employers we re glad to see rental controls go we lued without them for y a iew then they are st present control dtdn t lower them m all the year they have beertin effect supply and demand will bring about the only solution service that brings as its only reward a real u a tion of a duty performed any citizen who has ontfe served the mumci pality on any of the boards or council will be a better citizen for having given that service he orxhe witt hav5 a heller understanding of his nunicipality his or her rnticism will be more of a constructive nature and not so critical with cut justification or solution these days of november are important ones in the mumci pahty they are days when it is good lo talk with present and former individuals who have served it doesn t hurt to say a word of en couragement regarding their service it doesn t hurt to urge them to continue it docsn t hurt to think about new public servants to fill the post ton when others get tired in welldoing november is an important month municipal ly if there weren t already such a surplus of special weeks and months we would suggest that this be municipal month but then good citi zens interested in their community surely do not require such a special designation to take a keen and active interest in their own affair an educational plan the announcement last week of important changes in the ontario school system is received with interest first of all there is interest in the tact that ontario will have a defimie plan for education we have during the past few years been led to believe that ontario s plan for educa tion was vague and any changes were in the lap of a royal commission appointed some years ago we listened to a re broadcast of the minis ter s address and we have read the newspaper summaries and while the plans for grades up to six seem fairly well formulated the higher grades ae rather vague we tike fho plan of making public school education fit in with the high school studies without the break we are not too clear on what is meant by shifting the re sponsibihty for outlining the courses in ele mentary schools to local or municipal level if il means any more shifting of responsibility on local boards were against it local boards and local taxpayers have about all the responsibility they can assume in educational costs we like ihe idea of changes in school sub jects to meet changing needs and conditions and keep abreast of a changing world we felt when we were in school and we are still th rty years later of the opinion that some subjects art a waste of time in a practical way t the announcement by hon mr porttr s m ttrist riq and the publn will wnl to set the implement ng of the program throughout tht i rovincc there has of i hw bet n too much ton us on on educat on il policy in the province we hesitate to commend the pri sent pro posals but we do not hesitate to compliment the minister on a bold step to present a polity for ontario s educational system and for the study that must have been given the subject we would suggest that schools here do not rush lo be the ones chosen for trial period in the plan editorial notes smith falls has awarded contracts for a ewage disposal plant with muni cipal undertakings it is necessary if com mum tes are to keep abreast of the times such times also require the study of citizens and their willingness to undertake citizenship duties a the canada to become in the next 50 years some thought it was risky to make predictions but barring war most of the replies predicted a popurion of 25 to 50 millions any pred on a fifty year basis is safe
