wht jvttim sftt ft seventyeighth year no 5 acton ontario thursday august 7th 1952 eight homo print pages six cents lake is ox for swimming- moh fairy lake safe medical health for swimming officer says tr archie f bull medical of- tler of health in a recent letter to mnyor b d rnchlin reports that our sanitary inyspector mr powell has recently inspected the acton pond nnd taken water samp les to determine its safety for swim ming laboratory report on the water samples has returned today this report indicates that at the present time there is no contamina tion with sewn ce inyiew of the result of the physical examination of the pond itself and its environ ment and the result of the labora tory test we consider that the pond is safe for swimming so lone ns conditions do not chance apprec iably another tall one conies to ground about 0000 bricks enough for an average house are beinc salvaged this week as the big brick ehlmne at the acton public school 16 be inc demolished built in the days of twostorey school buildings it had to be of sufficient size to rise above the peak of the school and give the draught necessary for hand firing of those days our recollection would place the chimney as built well over thirty- five years ago when a bigger boiler and more rooms at the public school were found necessary it has served well its purpose and manv a dense cloud of black smoke wafted over town from its height to give the assurance that the school buildings were being made comfortoble nou esconscd n the new public school addition ls n bigger nnd more modern boiler hie chimney rises a reasonable height above the new onestorey building and alti tude ls not necessarj in the stoker fed boilers of todn nnd the smoke doesnt emit in wasteful clouds yt combustible material the new unit will heal all thi old buildings and the new addition to the school as well and so the dnvs of the tnll chimnevs and smoke nuisance are going mam of u could recid other big brick and steel rhimm that used to get it earn up in this same loralitv there was the hi brick chimne at the store tan- ner that wa fullv as big u the school chimne it came down n one big crash after the buildings around it had been dismantled then there was the chimne on the jvjw mill and the one on the plant of baxter laboratories and the stores gloe co still remain in thls part of town none of them erupt elouds of smoke an mot but burn coal more cconomicall there are more big tall chimnes around tow n on our industries but none of them have been built rec- cntlv and the tendency seems to be to dismantle the big ones mayoritachlln explained thnt with the polio season approaching he felt the water at fairy lake should be tested and he had con tacted the moh subsequently mr powell the sanitary inspector came up nnd made the tent at thnt lime he told me he had checked on omc of the properties adjacent to the creek which he felt may hnve contributed to pollution in the past and found that
