jobs and then we moved the hens yes indeed i stayed in the pen and caught them while the other three carried them away to new quarters quite a dis tance one hen got away and then fol lowed an argument as to who was responsible for its escape biddy iurturally dldn t stop to listen she went on her way rejoicing hunting for late worms and savoury rruhs neither did we waste our energy chasing her but left places open where she could shelter for the night of course we had callers while we were busy i have no idea what they thought of our dishevelled appearance catching hens and climbing apple trees doesnt im prove ones appearance however they only stopped long enough to say hello and goodbye after leav ing some perennial roots which they had promised for this fall these friends had an old lady w ith them mother and grandmo ther too they were taking her for a drive and then out for thanksgiving dinner away from her apartment where she lives alone this old lady has five children and about is grandchild ren she visits among them during the summer and comes back to her apartment for the winter she is loved and considered and yet says she is often lonely i looked at her and my thoughts went back once again to a home i visited last week where i saw many old people our itewly open ed home for the aged it is a marvellous place absolutely mod ern in every detail furnishings artistic and comfortable beds rayt- ful rooms airy and light meals good and the superintendent and his staff efficient kind and con siderate many of these aged res idents seemed well content but there were others whom i could not forget they seemed like people without hope just waiting many of them had been transfer red to this new home from a house of refuge where some of them had spent many years and i wondered had they any friends any fam- i ily had they been placed in the home and forgotten did they have visitors who were interested in them personally what uas tne story behind their expressionless others just sitting there were papers and magazines but none of them wasreading they were not even talking in the womens quarters some were reading writing letters or do inr fancy work a few were just sitting uith that same hopeless ex pression not even curious as to who the unknown person might be when 1 walked in many of them were in the same age group as the old lady who came here yesterday yet she is seldom idle reads a lot and takes an active interest in church work wherein lies the dif ference i may be wrong but it seems to me our aged citizens may be housed in the most modern and comfort able homes that can be built jet thej will never be happy unless there is someone who cares some one belonging to them who can make them feel they are still nee essir sill ablt to contribute in some un to the hippimsn of oth ers even bv lumg or if the cm bv knitting or making little things grandpa with time on hli hands can often make wonderful toys just b whittling and grandma should b encouraged to knit or sew even if she makes nothing more than potholder a home for the aged ma be the very best place for grandpa and grandma to rrccke proper care but they still need folks and a sense of belonging no home can take the place of filial love and respect and surely that is not too much to expect spoking of speling in a resent educaslonal magazecn too skolars point out that contrary to popular beleef speling among students has improved gratcly in the passed censhury but they also point out that many great writers often misspell words and that mls- peluig does not ncsesarfly prevent understanding we agree sez the chrishun siense momter ading the eltxabeothans showed a fine sense of independance and indlvid- juahsm in their spelling later came the tirany of the dlkshonerry artemus ward and his fellow-hum- ensts rebelled in the lthh censhurry and actrcd cute with the alfabct but got a btt bernard shaw tried more seerousl to make spell ing funkshonal and left
