paobtwo the acton free press acton ontario thursday december 18 195z christmas on 30 cents recently we read an article on christmas buy ing in which it was estimated that four hundred million dollars would bi spent by canadians this yuletlde it claimed that canadians would drink 50 million dollars worth of liquor and would flo in debt a hundred million traffic deaths would likely be double for december torlhoeof jan uary there were many items in that article which were shocking and commendable for bringing to shentlovil ressinfl end it recalled a boy- had 30 cents to spend on christmas presentstht year it took us hearty two weeks to make thit 30 cents spread over the gift list weve had mariy christmases since that that have very pleasant memories but some way or other that christmas with only 30 cents stands out in our recollections we suppose we should tell you that incident must have happened nearly 50 years ago when wages were about 150 for a 10hour day aneva nickel was a big price for shovelling a long stretch of sidewalk we suppose if we hadnt had 30 cents we would havemade the amount stretch over the gift list because there was no provision for going in 3e1it7 merry christmas today if canadians want to make it such its not the amount you spend that brings the greatest happiness the life of every man is a diary in trhleh in means to write we story and urrite an other and his humblest hour if when he compare the volume as tf is with what he hoped to make it james m barrie good year 1952 canadas gross national product the total value of goods and services produced is going through the roof again in 1952 and well through it too estimates put it at over 23 billionssome 8 above 1951s record of 212 billions reports the financial post the canadian family photograph should show most business and consumers smiling this year firsthalf woes in many lines of producing manu facturing and selling have given away to better days in the past six months important in 1952s figures is the fact that prices are only a few points above last years averages hence in reatterms of goods and ser vices canadians are producing and selling a lot more than they ever did before and even after tax bites they are left with more to spend or save looking ahead into 1953 the elements of growth will still be with us heavy investment strong consumer desires for more and better things of course there are some soft spots shifts within the totals some worries over export markets plus manmade restrictions on immigra tion bui if we can successfully counter these fac- tors theres the prospect for a broad basis of prosperity for 1953 it is ufith our judgments as with our udtches no two go just alike net each be- lielcs his own pope giving only joy shopping for christmas thinking of things to make other folks happy these are the pre-christ- mas days that can bring sx much pleasure leave such pleasant memories then again they can be made days of sadness when we do the selfish things try to please only ourselves and forget our obligations and joys to those we cherish christmas plans are being made there are so many opportunities to bring joys to others and they are really very simple in planning your christmas just trymaking the other fellow better or brighter of late years drunkenness and motor fatalities and injuries have been bringing sorrow to many a home at chrjmmas there have been regrets that lasted down through the years and were brought to view for many years after the kind father and the considerate husband will keep christmas in a way that will leave nothing but joy for his family and his wife and loveel ones may everyone ir making plans for a joyous christmas- tide make only those plans vvhich will bring oy and respect to all our homes before and after rather interesting when one is interested in such matters to learn of educational expondluire in other places for instance the town of walker- ton within the past few years built a new high school at a cost of over 30d000 an addition to the public school costing 125000 and an addi- ion to the separate school costing 200000 population of the town is listed in 1951 as 3264 in smiths falls a home owners association pas sed a reiolutlorrcertsurlng the extravagance of th board in building a new collegiate the meeting was held after the municipal nominations at which not a fergus tchoolkis pro viding accommodation for some rural pupils at a cost below that levied on the town taxpayers in view of all these educational costs else where the very modest program advanced by the department of education for north halton high school district should make the ratepayers of this district feel very satisfied the gymnasiums and socalled frills which are considered a part of all buildingserectedinthepastfewyearshavebeerr eliminated in north halton we may feel a bit slighted at the moment but there will not likely be the criticism levelled when jm amounts have to be paid the further expansion of our schools will come jn due course because undoubtedly the expansion of this district will prove the need for more accommodation in the meantime we have a very modest start on our problem of school ac commodation theres a very simple answer to those people who want to keep their names out of police coxirt news points out the orillia qnf poc f side of the lair dont blame the reporters and the newspapers blame yourself accidents cost money recently it was announced that accidentfree drivers of motor cars may receive a better in surance rate it comes as good news to learn that virtue may have its reward for too long the rates have been raised and levied on the whole experience of costs for all without attention to the individual out in saskatchewan where they have com pulsory insurance of all cars premiums will likely be increased next year between 10 and 100 depending on the vehicle category they have been enjdying some very cheap insurance in this province that all of us have looked upon with some envy but experience has shown that the rates just do not meet the costs proposed in crease for new vehicles will be 100 and present rate is i0 an increase that will effect every driver comes into effect in ontario when you apply foryour new permit in 1953 manitoba motorists are also due for an increase to meet the cost of paying un satisfied judgments the fee in ontario for meet ing the cost will be a dollar instead of the 50 cents engaged at present unsatisfied judgment funds were established in both provinces some years ago to indemnity victims of traffic accidents in cases where they couldnt collect damages awarded by the courts if on obtaining judgment they satisfied the court the defendant had no assets to pay they could apply to be paid from the fund later its application was extended to include victims of hit- andrun accidents in these cases where identity of the car driver was unknown the victim had no one to sue a procedure was set up whereby he could sue the registrar of motor vehicles as a nominal defendant the amount of damages awarded by the court was paid from the fund in ontario the fund has paid out more than 3 millions since it was established in july 1947 the fund s staled to have been running at a defi cit for the last two years the good old days may have seemed better back in 1902 a upeclal from daw mi
