saying of course but 1 suppose all these oldworld weather predictions must have been founded on the personal ob servations of country folk through out years here ore few more weather forecasts all wrapped up in rhyme signs of foul weather the hollow winds begin to blow the clouds look black the gl low tile soot falls down the spaniels sleep and spiders from their cobwebs creep last night the sun went pale tc bed the moon in halos hid his head the boding shepherd heaves a sigh for see a rainbow in the sky hark how the chairs and tables crack old bettys joints are on the rack her corns with shooting pains tor ment her and to her bed untimely sent her loud quack the ducks the sewfowl cry the distant hills are looking nigh twill surely rain we seet with sorrow- no working in the fields lomor- v drerasmus darwin the couplets go on for another 36 lines but check on the ones i have given you and you will pro bably know then whether or not it is going ao rain rain or shine it doesnt wony me verv much when i am at home but if i am going away for a day i wish i could be sure whether it will be warm or cold last friday f instance i had to go to toront and the forecast was for a high of 55 i rushed down town to pick up my spring coal from the cleaners so for once i was quite comfortable in the city at least i was as comfortable as i could be while riding around in the streetcars for a good part of the day i mean that literally as i had to go to the opposite out skirts of the city twice but fortun ately not in rush hours 1 also had occasion to visit one of the depart ments m the parliament buildings and believe me i couldn t have been treated with greater courtesy or consideration it was very gratifying to find public officials so pleasant and obliging to an absolute stranger one sometimes hears rumours to the contrary another experience last week concerned plumbing and as a result we are very thankful we are not faced with the necessity of putting in a furnace or a bathroom our outside pump was giving trouble partner was sure the leather washer had perished and so we sent for a plumber time was when partner would have done a job like that himself but it is beyond him now the plumber arrived along with his assistant took out the pump fixed it and put it back again the men were here for less than an hour yet the bill for labour alone was 5 now just suppose we had to have a big job done an eight hour day would cost at least 40 for labour plus the high cost materials used that is the sort of thing that makes farmers dissatis fied with their own returns a bathroom today would run into 1000 and possibly considerably more it would take a lot of milk eggs cream or wheat or even eight or nine cows to make up a siooo incidentally the trouble wfth our pump was not caused by a defec tive washer but by a nice fat frog the brass screening had broken awav from the intake and this pooi little frog had become wedged it partner was almost afraid to till me thi v had found a frog in the well he neednt have bon the thought of a frog in our drinking water did not worrv me not for i that u ngth of time frog and i wit r wm to belong together and after all frogs legs are considered i i i delicicv if it had bet n a rit or a few dtad mice ugh that would have been different come to ihmk of rt it would have bee n more appropriate had thev found a mke so dose- to st pitnck day snakes frogs or mice it just rjoe to show a well should be looked into once in i while however care fullv the lop is protected if then is no access through the top some rrtatur s find a w av of burrow me through the sides that is in the poefs corner watch your words keep- a watch on your worda my brother for words arc wonderful things they are swcct like the bees fresh honey like the bees the have terrible stings they can bless like the warm glad sunshine and brighten a lonely life they can cut in the strife of anger like an open twoedged knife let them pass through your lips un challenged if their errand is true and kind if they come to support the wenry to comfort and help the blind if a bitter revengeful spirit prompt the words let them pass unsaid they may flash through a brain like lightning or fall on a hearth like lead keep them back if they re cold and truel under bar and lock and seal the wounds thai they make my brother are always slow
