max two the acton free press acton ontario thursday november 8 ims when they get together heard a comment on saturday high as a fellow citizen watched the children at the halloween party now i know why we need so much more khoolroom thais ust it we don t realize un 11 we see big groups such as on halloween ust how many children there are in town who require school accommodation not many citizens hove the time to go to our schools at the noon hour or any of the periods when classes are going into school or are being dismissed many of us do not realize the growth of the school population in town since the days when we attended school it usl hasn t confront ed us until we see the group of school age child ren all in one place at the same time they come from all parts of the town we see only the few that come along the same way that we travel each day but on halloween or any day on the school grounds one can see why the demand for more school accommodation never seems to get caught another autumn delight many of us can remember when turkey was on the menu only at christmas and often a good goose had to provide the substitute for the supply qfjvrkeys that was limited that was before the days when turkeys were raised by the thousands and the present day methods permitted smaller space for raising turkeys turkey suppers are now a weekly and some times more often occurrence in town and district and with the turkey suppers that are provided by church and other groups go all the trimmings that any festive occasion would require never can understand how the ladies provide so much at such a nominal cost but we are just like other folks and it is not for us to reason how or why but to take tn ust as many as the digestive ap paratus and the figure will tolerate even with all the turkey suppers that are crowded in the months from october to decen ber the turkey at christmas loses none of its ap peal autumn glory and coloring are wonderful but so also are the turkey suppers which are so popular each autumn its wonderful that fine turkeys have become more plentiful than in ear her years when a few farmers raised only a few birds the game season talked with some neighboring farmers during the week and we are tqld that not alt the shoot ing of farm animals ts done by careless hunters we are told that trucks drive along the roads and use a searchlight to spot out cattle and sheep the light shows up the animals and they are shot and the carcass loaded in the truck and taken away we ve had quite a call for signs that are being posted on farms forbidding trespassing and shoot ing it seems that so often that shooting of farm animals can so easily be blamed on careless hunt ers that the only protection for the farmer is to close his properly for all trespassing the hunting season is now on many have oone north to enjoy an outing and hope to bring back some venison unfortunately there are those who are over anxious to get their quota unfortunately too there are many with little or no experience who venture on a hunting trip at this season the woods these days can be danger ous for all men and for farm animals it s a time for caution for all and for a real consideration of fhe property of other people the good old days may have seemed better back in 1903 back in 1933 ram the issue of the fre first of thursday november 5 ini the regular according to the wtngham ad vance is that the time honored practice of publish ing school children s reports is not a good idea and the department has suggested that no re ports be published in future the wingham paper gives this question argument on school competi tion in academic matters which apparently does not apply on the field of sports we have no information as to tiow the evils of published school reports were discovered so suddenly the practice has been going on for as long as we can remember without as far as we know any particular outcry from pupils parents or teachers possibly there has been a smoulder courage needednot profits a perusal of the daily news any day does not make pleasant reading and we often wonder how i is interpreted by countries which we would like to give the impression that our way of life and a free world are the best motor car fatalities mur ders broken homes cruelty to children are so often in the headlines that one is apt to be de pressed if there was not a realization that these portray a small portion of our people perhaps you have noticed thai so often in the stabbing and shooting cases the broken homes and the cruelty to children over indulgence in intoxicants is part of the story our free eccess to liquor is always giving irouble to law enforcement and makes crowds hard to handle here is one place where something could be done to make canada a better country in which to live and work the big easy profit from the sale of intoxi cants the revenue that accrues to the treasury of all governments are the things that cause every one to wink and pass by the crimes that can be laid at the door of whisky and such brews the revenues are used up many times in attempts to make right the ruin that liquor invariably brings we have had a trial of the free sale of in tcxicating beverages it has brought on the big gest crop of drinkers that any system has ever produced it s time that steps were taken to stop drunkenness the road back to the days of pro hibition of the sale will be long and hard but the sooner we start on that road the sooner canada and canadians will become a strong nation in the world that the authon ties work on the principle that the less parents know about education the better maybe they re right the idea nowadays seems to be to eliminate all trace of competition in the child s education we da ren t say that johnny jones is smarter or applies himself mort or earns higher grades it might offend johnny smith who isn t as bnqhi or doesn t apply himself as successful while sympathizing with the johnny smiths of this world we doubt if all this secrecy is of much value if the publishing of competitive figures offends those at the lower end of the class ybu might say with equal ustce that not publish mq the figures will offend those at the top of the class in its present state the wor d is a pretty com pehhve place and it would seem to us that the sooner children get
