the acton free ercss acton ontario thursday novfefcber 12 ibm reeding 9w n th linmt naming of small communities often had nostalgic twist weather always news there always seems to be one source of news that never farls for the past weeks folks m these parts havebeen talking about the exceptionally fine weather we have enjoyed this fall flowers were still in bloom in the gardens there were all kinds of predictions that the seasons were chang ing and even some that such weather was to con tinue until january then last saturday quite unexpectedly even tc the weather forecasters came a snow storm that in a few hours made travel difficult and if you were on the road made you wish you werent we speak from experience because on saturday morning it took two hours for us to get from mil ton to acton the trip a couple of hours earlier in the morning had takerl ust half an hour we weren t in the ditch and didn t have an accident but we ust couldn t get enough traction under the wheels of the car to get up a short grade the sand truck that was on its way to put trac tion under the wheels of cars crashed with an other vehicle and both were piled in the ditch ust at the top of the hill betow speystde there wasn f much could be done until the snow plow came alonq and cleared the road and a few shovels of i i i i i earner years sand under the wheels and helping hands to push started us along the road again that day the weather made the et3ines traffic was moving readily by mid afternoon ijut those who made predictions about no winter until white man warping the first snowfall of the season it was said m other days was a warning to the indians to pre pare for winter and after that came a period of indian summer in which the early inhabitants of north america laid in store their supplies for the winter months in the present day of much travel by automo bile the first snowfall serves as a warning to motorists that their driving habits of dry summer roads must be altered to meet the conditions of winter in spite of all the snow clearing and sand ing equipment that can be supplied m our can dian winter months there is always the hazard of small spots of slippery pavement there is always the probability whether forecast or not that a sudden storm will paralyze traffic put a fresh snow on the highways of the wet packing variety and a motor car is a very treache rous vehicle it doesn t go where you steer it and it doesn t stop when you want it to stop the win ter weather demands changes in drivers to meet the changed conditions slower speeds are essen tial if accidents are to be averted yes the first fall of snow in canada carries a warning to the white man of today ust as it did to the indian of by hartley fair in inn column recently jfrn oilk dtlwd into if the prankster is just a scribbler the soap can make all kinds of smears and in fact a coating that will entirely obscure the purpose of the window we have heard of many ways to clean the windows
