circular too late are you guilty encouraging illegal canvassing found at last when the chairman of the ontario hydro commission has been talking about your hy dro we have often wondered where his remarks were directed on many occasions he has been quoted as saying there will be no rate increases somewhere most hydro users gained the impres sion that the changeover to 60 cycle would not cost them anything in the past two years however there has been an overall increase of approximately 15 to most hydro consumers in ontario like most folks we sometimes wondered if it was our hydro to which mr saunders referred now we know one of the communities in ontario to which the chair man had reference in wmgham a rale reduction of 9 will go into effect immediately weve al ays felt that mr saunders was not a man to make rash statements and we were therefore pleased to locate the ontario municipality which fitted into his assertions of no rate increases we wonder if there are any other municipalities in ontario in the same favorable position as the wmgham users of your hydro treat all alike judging by the plans being shown the public in other towns the ban on some of the socalled frills on our school buildings are being lifted a proposed new high school for midland and pene- tang district is to have a cafeteria gymnasium cadet equipment storage equipment rifle range and of course some classrooms as well as shops music rooms home economics rooms etc the construction is to get underway this fall in view of the fact that auditorium gymnas turns were denied all three schools in north hol- ton district only a year ago it would appear there has been a changed attitude in the ontario de partmenl of education even a government so top heavy on one political party as the frost govern ment would surely not play favorites with any of the muncipalities in the province particularly not against halton which has been so loyal to the party in power it is fortunate that when the new additions were designed in north halton that plans were drawn for extensions denied by the department of educalion in the original approval now that such frills are again being sanctioned in new school buildings al least the auditonum-gym- rasium part of the schools in acton milton and georgetown will surely be given the same treat ment as other ontario municipalities good program continues the fine old maples that bordered our streets have been a source of oy to many of us but in the march of lime some of them must go such was the case with a couple on mill street this week act they had been trimmed to allow the passage of wires and used as braces for poles tntil there was little left but they served well for a good half century another start has been made on the improve ment of acton s mam thoroughfare which is also a part of no 7 highway some two years ago two blocks of mill street were made wider this year council is undertaking to pul more width in another block from john to elgin slreets it in volves moving of the cement curb and a new side walk its ust one of the improvements that is cue for street improvement throughout town and council is to be commended in the fact that the program started a couple of years ago is be ng re turned sidewalks are long overdue n many pols too often the pedesti an is the forqotten ind v dual and s dewalks are sometimes over looked there s a constant demand for funds for every purpose and wt ire well iwart that cou i cils are obliged to spread the niprovements pieh thin to meet tl t den and- we hop that trie s 1e walk mprovei ent ph w ii develop each v ir entil all t em ar aaequitel served we be i eve even a lev tact veai on the taxes for th s specif l purpose would not f nd optos t on w tt those who pay of course there s the dec sion always of who comes f rs and whost need s gceatest the years roll on we do not keep up on the sport news as we did a few years ago and it was an article in the fergus news record which drew our attention to the fact that durham had won the oha inter mediate b title and the last title won by durham was 18 years ago when they edged out acton in a wierd game in durham we well remember the game played in dur ham in the old arena acton went up to durham with a seven goal lead in a home and home ser ies with total goals to count the ice was arti ficial lhal night too but not the kind that acton had played on in gall to pile up the big goal mar gin we don t recall the final score but we n very vividly remember the way that lead faded that night many of the acton fans who went to the game never got inside the nnk they weren t memorial arenas 1 8 years ago the only way they kept progress on the game was by the cheers they heard outside and there was no doubt they knew of the progress of the game and who was win ning worst of all was writing a hockey story and endeavoring to explain why such a goal margin could possibly be overcome it was much more simple lo explain why bucko mcdonald s team won from acton some years later this year it was durham which took the championship from mc donalds sundndge learn perhaps even bucko is gelling older it hardly seems 18 years since the durham acton game acton did win the cham pionship for intermediate hockey in the interven mg period lets see that was in 1939 wasn i it reading bafwn ttw lines hy jim th11 recently a circular from the better business bureau reached this office warning of some can vasaers who were operating a shady type of operation before anything could be published in the form of a warning to citu ens the operators had been in town and cleared out i hope not too many people wen misleid but the strange part of it is that citizens have som protect ion from this type of practice which they seem hesitant to ex ercie aclon has what is termed a hawkers and peddlers by law that requires canvassers to sec urc a permit while it is the responsibility of the police to en force the bylaw they cinnot take necessary action unless cit izcns notify them of the pres ence of the canvassers local merchants and business men contribute to the support of the town through business tax as well as through the regular tax on real estate they are on important part of the community and provide innumonble servic is not ontnbuted to by door to door salesmen for your own protection when a door to door salesman presents a proposition ask for his license and if he cannot present it he has made no contribution to the fut ure of the town or the mainten ance of the streets and roads 1 if a canvasser cannot present the necessary credentials the next move is to telephone either the town office or the police with the necessary information and depending on the circumstances a fine may be imposed police receive regular reports on shady practices carried on by individuals licenses naturally wont be issued to those whoe practices are doubtful and that is the protecton you are entitled to as a resident of acton if you accept the gift line some callers are capable of without re questing credentials you are leaving yourself open to a swindle and forsaking any pro tection that might be available be sure to investigate before you sign vour mmc or pa vour money the local store wilt be here tomorrow but the cinvasser will be well on his n the good old days may have seemed better back that il had a while back as long as the members are getting good returns the amount is not bothersome in sullivan township some rate payers have refused to pay the halfmill levy for the federation of agriculture ll is reported that some of the ratepayers have sent cheques for their taxes less the levy for the federation of agncul ture it is said township officials have notified the banks not to accept the cheques which did not aive payment in full like everything else the federation levy in that township has gone from two tenthsof a mill to five tenths it is quite prob able too thai assessments have gone higher in the meantime the income of the farmers in lower in such a case it seems only logical there will arise obection to compulsory assessments whether it be in taxes or in
