track was back of the bam where there 4s now a large cherry orchard perhaps his love of horses may have bevn responsible for the fact that he was sometimes put of funds on more than one occasion he stopped a neighbor on the streets of milton to borrow 25c outspoken potltlclan the two brothers were also in- terested in registered shorthorn cattle and by this means did much to improve the basic livestock ind- ustry in halton county one of their farms was known as whites para dise all of the stock being pure bred animals imported from great britain the first consignment of which we find any record was in 1846 but it was probably as a politician that john white was best known he was an outspoken- antagonist against the family compact a liberal whip for many years and a loyal supporter of wm lyon mac kenzie who he is said to have hid den fromloyal 1st troops 4n the- devils cave at woodlands the home farm at bronte john white was recognized as a fearless and fluent speaker and for that reason was the chosen candi date against the equally patriotic and fervent colonel g k chisholm of oakville briefly john whites political career was as follows given six terms in 1851 john white was elected as liberal member for halton defeat ing dr hamilton in 1854 white was defeated by col chisholm by 300 votes in 1857 he turned the tables on col chisholm winning by 520 vot es in 1861 there was a contest be- 1 tween john white and finlay mo callum of milton mr white was elected by a majority of 331 in 1863 he increased his majority to 831 by defeating sheriff levi wilson of milton in mo tnc year of confederation mr white and col chisholm- again locked horns the latter being de feated by 137 votes in 1872 mr white was again suc cessful with 135 votes over his op ponent hon g c mckindsey in 1873 following the defeat of the sir john a mcdonald govern ment john white lost out against d b chisholm of hamilton mr chishol ran as an jnd erriperance candidate for die gov- ernment headed by the honorable alexander mackenzie hotly contested this perhaps was the most hotly contested election of mr whites a in white mir career and the first time politics and the temperance movement were linked together the oldtime re formers were taken completely dy surprise as it had been they them selves who had always backed the temperance movement outside of politics the victory or mr chis holm was celebrated in oakville by roasting a 1600 pound ox jt was slung on an iron pole and firemen were kept busy all night piling pine stumps beneath the animal to have it properly cooked- apparently the feast of celebration was held next day according to sandy mcgregor in his account published in the streetsville review there was a great gathering of men for the feast arid two waiters were kept con stnntly hilly cutting hinarf nnrili ing meat some of which was over cooked and some decidedly rare apparently this was unimportant as judging by the account it was any thing but a temperance celebration although given ostensibly to cele brate a temperance victory how ever the rejoicing was somewhat misplaced as two weeks later the election was protested and mr chis holm unseated because of preelec tion bribery by his agents byeleetlon called unseating a candidateelect was not uncommon at that time for it was an age when the populace took its politics seriously a byelection was called at which wm mccraney of oakville was elected mr white having retired in his favor mr while did not run again as a candi date for his party john white died in may 1897 at the age of 86 the masonic funeral in milton was largely attended business establishments were closed and the town bell tolled- mr white was survived by his widow and three daughters mrs campbell and miss white of milton and mrs s zimmerman of hamilton a son thomas lyon white had moved to the united states it was thought in many quarters that the honor able alexander mackenzie made a great mistake in not appointing john
