is a beautiful place but i wouldnt live there for any thingnot with those hillsf on my journey from london to bournemouth by motor coach we came through new forest where tliere wasnt a fence of any des cription cattle and forest ponies wandered at will along the byways and highways it was nothing to see a picnio party joined by a few ponies engir for tidbits and a little petting on the other hand some of the ponies are decidedly wild new forest is a hcavily wooded area set aside by william the conquer or as a conservation project it was larger at one time but it still covers an area of 92000 acreis or about 20 miles by m my next journey was to swan- age a beautiful little seaside town completely different from any place i have seen so far there are many quarries in dorset so naturally a good deal of the build- ing in years gone by was with stone not only are many of the houses and other buildings made with stone btit tire roofs are too great big stone shingles if one can call them that and how they were ever made to stay on the roof i cant imagine old iflckllp of eourse there are modern buildings too of necessity as swanage suffered considerably from bomb damage during the war fortunately many historic build- ings are still left for instance at the back of the town hijji there is the old biikuii built entirely of stone it is about the size of an average bathroom then u a thick oak door reinforced with iron bars no windows just a small oblong opening high up on the wall for ventilation and 1 heavy oak plank along one wall presumably for a bed over the door is the following inscription for the prevention of vice and immorality by the friends of rel igion and good ordert ai 11103 i am staying with a friend of long standing in swanage and she has been a marvellous guide and companion to many of the out standing historic sites in dorset one day we took a bus- trip through the hardy country the scent of thomas hardys tcss of the- dubcgvllles on the way we passed he little country churchyard when- lawrence of arabia lies buried church for 18 more interesting still is the town of wareham where there- ls a stone church st martins with a seating accommodation for 18 it is said to ha vi- been built in 70s by st adhelm first bishop of sher borne after 1702 it was used very little and had fallen into a state of neglect for two centuries it was little mure than a landmark then nunc lawrence of arabia by his influence and interest th- church was preserved and neces sary repairs completed without destroying any of its architectural features for instance at the sid of the altar there is the devils door j- relic -ot-oatly- -supermtwm- its only purpose a as t stand open when the church bells were run to allow the devil to escape why they should expect the devil to be in the house of god i dont know the stone font bears the inscript ion 1607 so the church was evident ly added to through the centuries inside the church there ls a recum bent effigy in stone of lawrence of arabia in arabian costume so whatever his failings this well- known autho certainly has to his credit the restoration of this anc ient village church- dared to form union another interesting historic site is that of todpuddle which com memorates the six farm laborers who in 1833 appealed for better living and working conditions- for agricultural workers at that time wages were about eight shillings a week although a loaf of wheaten bread was one shilling a pound loaf trie six men were de- ders ported to australia for daring to j town attefnpt to form a union their employees at todpuddle there t4 a seat un- over again nen held their secret meetings there is also a row of six houses erected in memory of the men the houses being named one for each of the men another landmark we passed was the ruins of the tarn- ous corfe castle of which may tell you more later- in fact there is much much more i could tell you about dorset even though i have been here such a short time but tomorrow i mast be on my way to bath maybe shall drink of the famous waters and get sortie of the travelling aches and pains out of my bones the weather has been decidedly chilly man
