it is one that has world wide fame vancouver and convention vancouver while not the capital of britih columbia might weil be termed the centre of the prov ince activity at the hotel van couver on arrival there was every semblance of an old boys reun ion the welcoming party at the station wore indian feathered headgear from nova scotia to the yukon oditors from tog and small centres of every province of the dominion met we were surprised however tt meet in the htel rotunda lr and mrs r n brown who had left acton a month previously on a visit to western panada at breakfat another morning wa mr george lawrence now public relations chieftain with imperial oil company who made inquiry about milton where he spent his boyhood and attended public and high schools anothr caller from acton was pete pap- imon who was at the coast on bus iness vancouver impressions there were many things which impressed us about vancouver perhaps there are knockers and pessimists who reside there but they are certainly outnumbered by the booster and the optimists ev en the rain and we had two days of it- is called liquid sunshine from mayor fred j hume who gave the welcome to the convent ion down to premier wa ben nett we learned of the greatness of the present and the rosy horiz ons of the future taxi drivers hotel employee- store clerks travel officials are all enthusiastic its contagious live tuesday although it rained had two highlights which will long be remembered a bus tour gave a very fine conception of vancouver mr and mrs f ronald graham have not only the finest home in the city but also the mort hospit able here the party of over 400 were entertained the home s modern and lavish the garden are marvellous and in a beautiful setting near the pacific young folks had an opportunity htfvbiqn and radio service by r w grant phone acton 394 c located at watsons music store to enjoy the indoor swimming pool older members had an opportunity to revel in the home beauty and lavish furnishings returning to- the hotel we were entertained with a reception and buffet and a half hour broadcast by the c3c then xushed by buses to the cpr pier where the prin cess patricia was given over to the party through the courtesy of the cpr here a 10 piece orchestra enliv- erfed the welcome and each lady of the party had a lei put about her neckv which was made of fresh flowers flown up from hawaii mrs dills kept hers for two days and started to bring it home but its beauty was gone after the first day on the train there was dancing and bingo with splendid prizes and again ample lunch served aboard mrs dills was adept at bingo and won a prize piper for breakfast a four hour cruise took us back into the harbor with the lights of vancouver showing the shore it was a night which-c-umaxed-a-won- derful day the princess patricia is a large boat which goes along the coast on regulartrips it had ample accommodation for the 400 on the trip breakfast calls were always at 730 and even these meals were never dull or had a yawn members of the ad aiid sales club had wjir paint applied daily there wjye pipers for the first breakfast and indians and war dances medicine men and cub reporters weighing 250 ibs and a power mower to clean tie crumbs from the floor at one runchcon the guest speaker was led in captive by two giant chiefs and given u new scalp aith long braids for his bald pate by the indian braves fine muhic big fish at luncheon on wednesday three of the finest vocalisls on the west coast provided a delightful program their names we cannot recall but their performance was one we will always remember that day two chefs brought in a 32 pound salmon which was dis played on stage prizes of 10 20- pounders were awarded to winners for various unique accomplish ments each winner was photo graphed beside the big fish the prizes were forwarded to the home address of the winners and packed to arrive in perfect con- dttion they were given by the fishing association of british col umbia at the breakfast of the associat ion of canadian advertisers mr adam smith the representative of this group had added to the menu two large salmin which he had british columbia with premier w a bennett as gnet speaker it was another highlight and we were de lighted to hear thik western pre- mier propound hi views which were not entirely in agreement from an eastern canada viewpoint two events we had to pass up were the trip to grouse mountain by bus and chair lift nnd the cour tesy offered to golfers the day fol lowing the convention we remained in vancouver for a meeting of the board of directors of cwna and managed an hour of sightseeing of another section of vancouver climaxing hospitality final event of our visit in van couver wa a brief visit to stan ley park and a chjncsc dinner in the famed chinatown this was through the courtesy of friends of editor and mrs frank melnyr of dun over 40 y ago mr and mrs john corneit went from dundalk to vancouver and operat ed a successful shoe business mr cornett served several terms as mayor of vancouver and is now an alderman of the city the dinner for six was in the moongate plaza room of the bam boo terrace on pender street be sides the party of six in this por tion of the restaurant was a fam ily party of 20 or so chinese who were celebrating a birthday our dinner had eight courses and there was no dessert no btead or butter the jasmine tea which started the dinner nnd rice also finished the meal the tea pot was constantly filled and the rice bowls never emptied the dishes defy definition each coure was brought on in a large dih nnd mm cornett as hostess seryed her guests we were supplied with chop sticks but thankful that the more familiar utensils were alio available the food wai all good but vpry different the chop sticks we were pres ented with by mr cornett and this menu a nice new fresh one painted in hong kong by yee tin tong ltd was also a souvenir
