gwendoline p clarke this is thanksgiving day a big day for canadian families i im agine we are just as thankful as most people for the bounty of the earth but yet it is one season that we jiave never made a point of celebrating that is to the point of having thanksgiving dinner and all the trimmings partner and i were invited out to a turkey din ner but we preferred staying at home to travelling the highways crowded with slaphappy motor ists bob and joy have gone to corn wall for the weekend but dee ait dave and another little boy were heie yseterday also friends from the guelph district and they all went home loaded down with apples greenings and spys i think between them they shipped the trees the apple ciop this year is wonderful in fact when you look back it has been a good fruit year all round i suppose most house wives like myself are finding it quite a job to locate even one empty sealer i am wilting this column from a sunny south room upstairs we have not yet started using the furnace beciuse we find the south side of the house w ith the sun streaming in is warm enough while the kitchen stove keeps the north and west sides of the house quite comfortable after all why bother fussing around with a furnace until you have to so long as the furnace is all ready to go at a minutes notice that is all that is necesary it will get plenty of use later on every time i go down cellar i look at the bulging bins it doesn t seem possible we shall use all that coal before warm weather comes around again in their new three- storey house i new to them that is dee and arthur have a -stoker- furnace and they think they are going to like it better than the oil furnace they had in the other house more economical too so many ways to heat a house and most people looking for a heat ing system that ensures the least possible amount of work a far cry from the days when the majority of houses country homes anyway were healed with only the kitchen range and a potbellied stove in the parlour and perhaps a box- stove or quebec heater in the din- n ing room rockwood plowmen win in specials at wellington match the largest potwar crowd saw the 1955 wellington county plow men s match last thursday at the farm of robert macrbbie and sons in puslinch township an es timated 2000 people watched the activities of the day w ith perfetal weather conditions one of the special events of the day was a tractor battle between five members of wellington county council side by sid handling 10 furrow plows set not less than 10 inches deep were dave gray the reeve of eramosa charles good win jim brunett bruce freure and jim mccaig henry hosking m p was among those watching this contest with particular interest rockwood s dave gray finally took the top honors and the 25 prize aftb from rockwood was the winner of the esso champions tractor plow special for this year he was walter gray on his home faim archie mac- robbie won the esso champions horse plow special for 1955 bert robertson of r r 1 guelph was awarded the muirhead plowing tiophy for the best land plowed by a resident of erin township at the match examples of how a tractor should be driven were seen in a safe- driving competition open to wel lington county residents at high speeds the tractois weaved th way between obstacles while tow ing empty carts ross milne of the oac guelph was the judge and h g norry wyndham st guelph ont those were the days when a pile of dry wood was our greatest treasure preferably hickory oak or maple remember the lovely smell that came from burning hick ory bark occasionally the house- w ife would be faced with nothing but green elm or apple wood and then the fire would smoke and smoulder and the oven wouldn t get hot and there would be fre quent trips to the chipyard so as to get the potatoes boiled for dinner too many chips and sometimes the stove pipes would catch fire ah yes those were the good old days don t you sometimes look back ind wonder how we ever survived i do but every ige has its problems at present we are faced with dim inishing farm incomes increased cost of production high cost of la bor and essential services speed on the highways and increased fees for hospitalization apparently it is only a matter of time before some kind of health insurance will be inaugurated whe ther at the national oi provincial level remains to be een it loo will have its drawbacks but yet a uniform scheme of some sort will eventually have to be worked out at present wage earners ire pretty well looked after but what protection is there for the farmer and his family true they may subscribe to an independ ent form of hospitalization but farm people seldom go to hospital if it can bo avoided and hospital insurance doesn t cover the cost of illness in the home and as every one knows a person can run up big medical expense without ever going near a hospuil except on a farm this creates a situation where by patients instead of staying at home go to hospital as the only means of collecting insuranee it y one reason why ourhoiptals are overcrowded a national health scheme to assist with the financial hometreatment of patients would be a step in the right dnection two years ago w hen partner broke his collarbone there was naturally a big doctor s bill but not one cent could we get from insui- ance as partnei was not in the hos pital he felt he should stay home and keep an eye on things there i must be hundreds of similar case- i remember one time during the depression a doctor said this the rich can afford to pay the poor i are looked after but the mlddlo- class person pays his account w ith- out assistance often as a result f selling cattle he should- keep or raising a mortgage on the farm well health insurance belongs to the future now supposing we look i back a year just about this time hurricane hazel hit ontario re- member raemore drive and the international plowing match l and all the instances of major and minor damage in so many loc alities by comparison we have every reison to make this a happy i thankgiving weekend ttowuftc beardmore oct 3 a ratcliffe 745 j mol- ody 742 w allen 304 a roach 705 and m
