vicepresident and comptroller of westinghouse told why his in- dustry decided to locate a new plant in stratford many large industries are finding that a policy of decentralization of their work has been success ful industries which have become unwieldy as a whole find that various divisions can very well be spread about in other centres here are some of the things the westinghouse company have found necessary to determine be fore locating a nqt plant i accessibilit l stip specials fo a in the unitd states the chamber of com merce estimates that in 1956 there will be 322 special days and weeks observed believe it or not the first event of this year was odorless decoration week sorihe of the weeks to be ob- served are most interesting in january tea crochet and the potato chip will be honored february features good break fasts canned salmon and pimentos in march peanuts smiles linen and fruit all get attention and in april motherinlaws and national secre taries are to be specially honored getting into may correct posture and better bedding have weeks as well as motels hamburg ers raisins and rabbits in june they have sons week bow tie week and national hillbillyrhome- coming week july has a whole month to honor the hot dog and it likely will be august has sandwich month and variety week september marks soft water week and sweater week in october there are weeks to save the horse a day for grandmas and grandpas macaroni pretzels popcorn and donut each have a week an also pass the l week we might as well give you some examples for no- vembcr such cat week cranb an c 2 an adequate supply of labor of the types and skills required 3 assurance that good labor relations can be secured and maintained 4 assurance that labor rates will be competi tive with those of other manufacturers making the same products 6 suitable housing and living conditions for employees and management people 7 assurance of good community relation ships keeping the old what is applicable to securing new industry in any community it will also be noted may well apply to retaining established industry too often in the rush for new industry we are prone to for get the needs of the present industry perhaps we too often take the old industry for granted it may be that we assume that an industry which has b long established in a town has become such an integral part of it thatttisrtakerrfoihrjrant- ed it might be well to remember however that the same rules which make any town desirable for new industry are also applicable for industry to remain in a community and deepen its roots there of course in spite of regulations to the contrary it is occasionally found that in the race for getting industry into a town inducements are offered which make it attractive for a new loca tion to be sought for a new building in such cas es there is little that can be done about the shift the point thats important in any towns in dustrial relations is the necessity for maintaining good relations with established industry as well asgetting enthusiastic liver the welcoming and reception of a new industry both are important to good industrial relations and both require equal treatment otherwise the established in dustry cannot compete in world markets bird week december it seems is kind of filled with christmas preparation and only week sched uled is national prosperity week you will note such well known days as easter mothers day and fathers day and holidays such as labor day and thanksgiving have not been mentioned to list all of the 322 events marked as special would make a lengthy list we are thankful that canada lags a little behind in this observance of special days and weeks bigger arid bigger in these days of merging groups of industry and labor we are reminded of the little rhyme father used to qudte and it takes on a different meaning than it had in childhood it ran thus big fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite em and these in turn have lesser fleas and so ad infinitum of course we hasten to explain that the word fleas is riot appropriate and should be sub stituted in the application to which we would put the rhyme in our trend of thinking the small in dustries often one man achievements in found ing have down through the years been beset with the competition of big streamlined manu facturing costs were cut in the big plant and a larger unit formed to make more articles avail able at a lower cost per unit the bigger plant be- came bothe by a bigger merg unt we hav laws limiting the size of corporations so that con trol of all things may not come under one direc tion taborgroups have now merged to make a bigger unit to beset the big company groups the a f l c i o now will be made up of the 109 unions formerly belonging to the a f l and the 32 former c i o unions looks as if we are at the point where the battle will be between two giants who can paralyze the whole country to meet whatever demands may be deemed necessary maybe we have reached the point where laws against mergers in other groups may have to be applied but is this the cure all thus mass management and mass thinking either in industry oy labor may easily become centered in a government that is a dictatorship at the present time and in the forseeable future it would seem that no humans are capable of be ing entrusted with this great power over their fellowmen we are still staggering under the ex perience which culminated in collapse in europe we need to guard here in canada against similar photo by esther taylor ice and snow can oldsuccessfully it isnt many years ago since longevity was a new word in common talk a hundred years ago the average life expectancy at birth on this continent was only 40 years today in canada it is 66 3 years for men and 708 years for women well we read all the items under such head- ings as science and old age- and why worry and no cause for pessimism and how big a problem and wound up with the final para graph on lot a rocking chair the final apt quotation was from colonel anderson who at 91 was dean of united states artists when asked what is your greatesj picture he replied i havent painted it yet we liked that conclusion better than all the statistics on mans age people apparently do not grow old unless they desire to entertain that aged feeling we did find it nice to learn that if one is adding years there are getting to be more and more of us who are in the same category events that are leading us up to big groups con trolled by a few history has its lessons we must learn by ex perience the question poses of who will be the survivors in the struggle of getting bigger and bigger when every- hojidayrindeed almost every weekend takes its toll of human life one won ders
