maria street bridge the same plat form that many an individual aspiring for mun icipal office in acton has used in desperation when all other issues failed to attain his election for the past 40 years and many have no cause for concern however weve heard plenty over the years this gigantic wooden structure carries traffic over a single line of railway track it is built on a street allowance belonging to the town and serves several hundred ratepayers of acton who pay taxes for all services here just as any other ratepayer if it collapsed these ratepay ers would be isolated from the rest of the town as far as fire fighting purposes garbage collect ion snow clearing etc it is quite feasible that the railway company would in that event clear away the debris and continue its usual service on the spur line those citizens on the crescent wont be able to shop downtown or get to the town roads it is quite true the structure was built in the first instance by what was jthen known as the acton tanning co and beardmore co for those of us who have lived in acton many years this is not unusual the beardmore co supplied ac ton with its tennis courts lawn bowling greens ictub house they sand the town street in winter leading from their plant to mill street if memory serves us correctly they assisted in lay ing stone road on church street when traffic was horse drawn from the railway to the plant they provided land for actons sewage disposal the tanneryjias been here long before acton became an incorporated village we couldnt begin to enumerate the assistance this industry which is still today actons largest has played in the towns growth if when we return after the hearing we learn this local political football has been kicked out to dolly varden we will be just as there is apparently no record of the number of bootleggers caught and stilj at large or of the crime that followed in the wake of this con sumption and expenditure on alcoholic beverag es it would seem however that a traffic with an increase in the year of 603000 needed no assistance by advertising to spread its path of destruction haltons place in industry while the latest report on manufacturing in dustries in canada gives the figures for 1952- it has always been found of interest to our readers especially the figures in our own county of hal- ton there are in those years between 1952 and 1956 many cnarfges in halton county as a man ufacturing centre the figures the most recent of the dominion bureauof statistics will be found enlightening and if you happen totiave the fig ures we gave for 1951 it will reflect something of the industrial expansion that even four years ago was taking shape in halton total selling value of factory shipments was 52722633 there are listed 148 establish ments with 4913 salaried employees and wage earners earning 12975502 acton had in that year 19 establishments turning out shipments with a selling value of 9717743 there were 902 on 4he payrolls earning a total of 2082617 milton listed 1 5 establishme with prndiirts of a selling value of 6403769 there were 667 receiving salaries and wagesamounting in total to 1765479 georgetown had 16 establishments with a selling value of products of 8691236 there were 833 persons employed receiving a total of 2522729 in salaries and wages- there has been a big change in the industrial aspect of halton county with the towns of oak- ville and burlington leading in growth in this phase oakville led the halton municipalities with 14991388 in value of factory shipments from 54 establishments there were 1760 in industry earning a total of 3859124 burlington had 24 establishments producing a total of 1098644477 there were 870 salar ied employees and wage earners earning a total of 23895277 it will be interesting to watch the figures for succeeding years in this rapidly developing in dustrial county the 1952 figures are the latest published we find this booklet giving
