had explained the program to us we went by bus to carleton college where we had our first group discussion on canadian citizenship we were divided into nine groups each group consisting of monday morning may 14 when i joined ibs other students from all parts of canada in the chateau lnurier convention hall there we were welcomed to ot tawa by the president of the ot tawa rotary club preston eagle- qizsdi for ten minutes and it meant j wo were presented with certif icates of canadian citizenship in the railway committee room of the parliament buildings prime minjster st laurent who was supposed to present them to us was too busy in the house of commons and so the honorable j w pickcrsgill minister of citizen ship arid immigration was taking his place stopped by bell while mr plckeragill was ad dressing us a bell began to ring it that he had to go and vote on some matter in the house of commons before the bell stopped ringing the certificates were finally pres ented to us by mr jwkcrsgius secretary wc were then taken on a con ducted tour of placcs of special in- j tcrcst in the parliament buildings we went up to the top of the peace tower from where we could see all of tuesday morning we visited the national museum of canada and following our second group dis cussion we had luncheon 111 the chateau launci the honorable george drew addressed us on our government and on the future of canada tuesday afternoon we visited the supreme court building court was 111 session and we were allowed to view the proceedings for ten min utes we then moved to the ex chequer court where chief just ice fautcux spoke to us briefly he emphasized the fact that the sup reme court does not declare a man innocent or guilty but merely says that it ve is improper for the lower court to say that the nun was in nocent or guilty see governorgeneral after leaving the supreme court we visited the government house and grounds the governor- geneial spoke to us briefly the mounted police arc very- much in evidence in ottawa some with their bright red coats others with brown ones tuesday evening we had dinner in the ilideau room of murphy- gamble ltd which is a depart ment store mr m j cold well leader of the c c f party and mr solon low leader of the social credit parly spoke briefly then we went to the national museum where we saw four films about canndu one of them was especial ly interesting explaining the st lawrence seaway project wednesday morning wc visited the nutionnl art gallery wednes day noon wc had luncheon at the coliseum in lansdowne park where we were guests of the fed eral district commission snow not tulips after lunch we went by bus on 1 tour of ottawa and hull as it was snowing we could see very little through the bus wmdvy 11 was a great disappointment to everyone that the tulips weie not in full bloom my room mute a girl from new brunswick and i were billeted in a private home although we saw little of ottawa on the guided tout out host vci kindly in one tif the salons of the chateau laurier spoke for ontario thursday morning the hoys vis ited the national research council of canada while the girls visited the itoyal canadian mint and the public archives thursday noon was the farewell luncheon at the chateau laurlcr one student from each province wis chosen to speak briefly i poke for ontario on our visit to th mint and archives this
