be popular around thit perl of the country lately and this week the free pren obterve e birthdayit 83rd there are e number of thmgt to reflect on at the annual milestone one cen look back or ahead but perhaps a mixture of these reflective ingredients would be moil suit able when joseph hacking distributed hit first jtsue of the acton free press in the warm july days of 1875 no doubt he envisioned something of the future that is the acton of today his action was not without courage it took considerable effort and eel to organ ire and publish a paper its quite probable too that the citizens of acton were proud of the new community en deavour and pleased to have their own news paper news of the outside world was not as plentiful as now and the hard working citizens were not as surrounded by news media as at present editors have come and gone through the history of the paper equipment has changed the speeding years have altered procedures and attitudes are different jihe situation iinj entirely different the forward look with dominion day this year coming midway between publication days it is a sub feet that is timely either before or after the day and we have chosen this year to publish our thoughts after the holiday like some others over the daring age of youth we spent the day at home and watched the cars go screeching by the headlines of the holt- day tell the story of the toll of those who just dtdnt make a set return though when we publish today s paper we ii be ut as proud of it as joseph hacking was of his first i slue editors through ihe yean have developed that attitude to the free press and this we feel what has kept it an award winner and leading canadian weekly it is to be hoped this doe in t sound like bragging the progress and the heritage are not a single mans making a hard working staff technical advances and a loyal reader ship all contribute to the success of any pub lication the free press has been fortunate in having this happy combination during its life and as we reflect on this birthday we can look ahead to addition of a new build ing end installation of a new press represents e mafor expansion for the free press pub lishers like other business men mustbe pre pared to advance in keeping with the needs of en area because of this an expansion pro gram hat become necessary as we continue to look ahead too and fee e new year tt always seems fitting that we reaffirm our goal of keeping acton first end keeping acton s newspaper the best poffds and pebbles here is a story with a moral the first chapter of which we cen only deduce a couple of weeks ago a mother a fath er was dmtng in a greater new yok hotel where a state teachers convention was in progress she or he noticed two teachers sitting at a nearby table and felt somehow impelled to drop a pebble of gratitude into a greet pond of need the second chapter is reported news the two teachers finished their luncheon and ask ed the waiter for their cheques no charge he told them and when pressed he handed them a note r don t take any money from these teach ers said the note i have two boys in schooc i owe so much to the teachers and added the waiter no tip please thats my little token of the same that was the pebble and the ripples the story was spread from the convention platform also no doubt from the delegates assembled to thousands of teachers back rtome end perhaps by some newspapers to thousands more but lets not dwell on the holiday traged- es but give more concern to this great lend- of ours on this 90th birthday these ere great days for canada in au of its ten provinces its cities towns and hamlets and its expansive farm lands on land youthful and offering great opportunities forthose who will qo out nd get it its land which is developing end enjoying the lessons taught by exper tence in other lands these 90 years since confederation have been wonderful but the years ahead can be a greater era than any canadians now living have ever enjoyed considering the broad expanses within our borders we will find that canadians have ample elbow room and can look after many ithv people the natural resources of what was once considered barren land can hardly be comprehended by average citizens of this great country canadians of 1957 may well look back with appreciative hearts for what the past has provided and forward with confidence to the promise of being the greatest nation in the world let us not be boastful but e responi ible people in making canada great in all things t t it would ba our guass that many a teach- r hearing of it banding a bit under todays burdens laid on by over zealous critics look ed up as did elbrus servant and glimpsed if but for e moment the hosts of people like the most of us around her the morel a very old one put in termsi never tell your pebble short thai pond you drop it in than you thiol clrtkltavtji one at terra cotta are two weve heard of and seen municipalities are noting the need for conserving some park areas too with tra falgar establishing centres an extensive park area at hornby is rapidly coming along with community and municipality coopera tion halton is beautiulnd its beauty is quite visible if youre not tn a big hurry 4 4 4 i i those little things the little fellow sick in hospital would not get better according to the best advice the news grieved the neighbors m the block where the boy lived but oneofthem had an idea which was quickly accepted they took up a col led ton bought the young ster a tricyde and took it down to the hos pital room maybe a look at it would give him ust a little pleasure before he joined the angels they thought the child was too weak to see the tricycle on tht- toor so white the tew tn the room tried to hold bock their tears the tricycle was lifted up close to the bed where he could lee v a brief flash of pleased interest n the boy s eyes was a reward for the trouble tak en but that was not the real reward almost miraculously the boy took a turn for the bet terand recovered maybe he decided he uit had to have a ride on that bike it makes one wonder if wetdo put enough emphasis on some of ihe little things like being good neighbors even scenic beauty in halton in this summer season of heavy highway traffic we find an urge to make our direction to the country roads of the district this we find cen be most rewarding even without crossing the county line helton abounds with scenic beauty that many would willingly drive miles to see if it was extens ively advertised and directional signs posted don t get us wrong we re not advocating a mass posting of signs but we do feel a leisoreudrive can provide some rewarding scenery even without leaving town acton park or more officially prospect park can provide some pleasant scenery end certainty many out of towners are finding it a fine topping spot acton is the envyof many surrounding municipalities for its fine park formation of the parks board and assistance of other organ izations is quickly making it even more at tractive the old swimmin hole am what it used to be of course there s the beaver dam and all four townships abound with interesting roads from some of the roads in nassega- ya one can get a beautiful view of the niagara escarpment beck from some of the roads are spots common to f ishermerf but sel dom seen by a speeding traveller j helton community park at lowville is an attractive picnic ground too with a strong stream end plenty of open space as well as shaded areas there ere commercially- developed areas in halron that ere attracting children it is the close ap proach of the clowns that scares the little ones i felt so sorry for mary missing all the fun because of her fear of the clowns before we watched the parade we went up to ginger farm and found the house occupied by a young couple with four small children they had moved in only the day before so of course they were onlv half unpacked but oh dear the things that happen
