industrial acreage tn acton is indeed the most encouraging development on the industrial front for some months while little could be told et he time it should still provide some encouragement for those who prefer to paint the dark picture for acton i future and among the worst offenders of that picture painting are some of acton s citizens to many every other town appears to be way ahead in reality their position is very equal the stortes of progress tn other centres come from people who live there and who have some kind of faith in their municipality in acton ihe town has to count on that same type of advertising to keep the municipality s name in proper perspective industrial deals dont develop over night or uat for the price of wishing limited con tact is quite essential to negotiations in si mary s within the past few weeks announce ment was made that a plant of hmde and deusch was to locate there employing about 60 people the negotiations had been earned on for months in this latest announcement a similar pet tern of negotiations it reflected n the work of the mayor we know for certain of at least one holiday weekend that was tpent wailing for a telephone call and undoubted ly there have been many othrrj only a small percentage of the industrial leach thjat appear ever deve op but none tan be g nored when the town is put tn ccmpem on w h many cncr ofl o mun c pam ei fcr a new ndlsry we can mag ne that one of the mcsl d i courag ng aspeci of nduitr al promol on lor any comm tree or individual must be ihe ccn slant grumb ng of a few cit ens for mmed ate result h e her contnbut on o the cause i one of poor advert ng last week s news was encouraging and we hope allatizen will adopt the mantle of booster rather than buster another first for halton helton seems conimually able to take credit for firsts despite its being ontarios second smallest county in fir fighting halton developed the mu tual aid program that has served as a pattern for many other areas where similar plans have been developed now announcement of a oint effort on fire prevention seems to round out the pic ture and add another first for halton in previous years individual efforts have been made by halton fire fighters to educate and inform the public on the importance of fire prevention results have been a very apathetic public and the direct result of that ha been a very discouraged fire brigade this yeei wh the establishment of a county wide program better results are look ed for and perhaps a more interested public will appear somewhat as speedily as they do when the fire sren sounds we are constantly reminded of the need for fire prevention education as the toll frorrt licking flames climbs higher to include more end more properly damage and more end monj lives halton fuefighers deserve credit for as- turning the additional roll of fire prevention on a county scale while still msininntng their duties as firefighters its another first for halton apd un-doubt- dly its result will be watched with marked interest by other counties vfritl halton cltl- ens do their part in melting the mqve suc cessful paper litter a personal problem at this time of year the amount of trash and lifter that blowr around the streets is astounding and becomes more than en irrhe- tton to those responsible for efforts to keep the thorough faresof ihe town in some degree of tidiness goodness knows the dust prob lem is bad enough without having the eye sore of hollering papers end scattered bits of cad and boxes everywhere a question es to where all this stuff conv es from is a fair and logical one and one to which there is only one answer people ere just careless actually there it no reason et ii for even one bit of paper being blown around every piece in some manner mutt have been released outside either when thrown out with garbage or tossed into the street m such forms as cigarette or candy box es if everyone were truly tidyonsclout ihere would be no paper titter maybe those who throw cigarette boxes on the street for example act in ihe same way at home by throwing them on the floor but we doubt it we cannot imagine anyone like that ust the same as we cannot imagine anyone ihtnkmgly throwing paper of any kind away outside yet it is done regularly and prolifkatly it is said that there are oow too many laws and regulations overriding the peoples of the world laws are only necessary when people neglect to carry out their responsibilities fairly and honestly they are necessary to force people to live up to their responsibilities in relationship with others and their communi ties it is disregard of the elementary need for tidiness that has produced laws providing penalties for throwing litter on ijiqhweys such laws can be quite irritating yet ihey would not be necessary if everyone acted as they should there is a challenge in connection with this litter business within this town a chal lenge to everyone whether e householder or only temporary resident occupying only a room a continuation of this paperdiscarding habit could well call for the enforcement of fines but that is all so unnecessary unpleasant and unfriendly the cure is entirely in the hands of the people themselves who could quckly correct the presence of untidiness by refraining to throw away or place papers where winds can reach them on a statistical level ll is always interesting to follow polls and compare the r results with some cf their predict oni tn scann ng d sr ct papers this wcra we noted an oikv lie paper had qu zed some rti dents for their op nion on local ng a landshell in a park ihere all the op nions favored suh a meve fcr vftf ous reasons and one cons dtred the fi nanc ng of such a project the comment went t lie th s it would be wonderful and even f only a s iver collect on were taken con tr butors would soon pay for any such a bandshell now we realize how hastily these com ments were probably given and we attack no looks of scorn but it docs seem that silver collections at band concerts would be a long time paying for any bandshell our point though is the opinion of many people about how little things should cost and how easily they can be paid for this seems to be one of the problems not only in personal financing but also in business and municipal financmgx citizens often promote their favorite pro icct on the basts of how little it will cost and how easily it can be paid for forgetting about the end cost of a multitude of little projects all lumped together we ve been noting lately some of the difficulties georgetown n having chiefly with figures last week the herald comment ed a few years ago optimists were talking about a town of 10 20 or 30 thousand peo ple growing up over night subsequent de velopments have shown that growth does not come that rapidly and yet past statistics and geographical location give every mdica ion that georgetown will have an upward growth eactyear the georgetown editorial continues a bnef submitted recently to council by the del re firm has statistics which show that a certain amount of residential building will more than carry itself m taxes and provide a substantial surplus to help pay off sewer costs this is ust one of the statistical problems that affects every ontario municipality no one knows 0st how much any town will grow and it is extremely embarrassing to be ace y yed later of not thinking big enough or of having thought too big while it is fine for any municipality to progress it teems important to get away from the anaesthetic term
