twinkle and glow just take a look down acton main streets and sea m the christmas season hasnt sen led in theyre all aglow with colorful lighti that sparkle and cheer not just the town rest dents but certainly those ho must travel highway seven and pass through the town ii s a good sign and one foe which the acton chamber of commerce along wim its supporters deserve a hearty festive thank you brightening up towns is a good idea and one that emphasizes to those who begin now to search the shops for christmas remem brances that here is a place out to please end serve your needs were sure acton merchants will be ex tending their efforts this year as in other years to offer merchandise that is comparable to or better than that offered after a lengthy drive and a franticjaush in larger department stores actually acton s main business section it one big department store in itself and it hat an advantage over a shopping centre since there is direct competition between different types of merchandise an unheard of thing in a shopping centre but really we didn t start out to extol the advantages of shopping this christmas in acton we really ust intended to congratu late the chamber of commerce for putting into lights the magic feeling of christmas it s the time for school concerts and christmas parties its the time for early mailing and choosing christmas cards its the time for choosing presents and thinking of friends who are miles away its a lime for planning the great christmas day itself when friends gather with friends to enoy the true fellowship of the festive season and the twinkle and sparkle of those chamber of commerce lights on the streets helps us to anticipate the event with all its brightness and warmth oh christmas tree christmas trees a symbol of gaiety and happiness too often become a mass of flames and a symbol of disaster trees decorations and special christmas costumes should all be chosen with special care and protected from fire check these recommendations for safety in the home during the christmas season 1 choose a small christmas tree it will be less hazardous than a larger one 2 keep the base of the tree m a con tamer of water the water will be absorbed and keep the tree moist 3 keep trees away from stoves heaters and fireplaces 4 use good quality electric lights on the tree not candles 5 check your lights for any defects which might cause short circuits 6 be sure that christmas lights do not overload the electrical circuits in your home 7 keep papers gifts and other inflam mable articles away from the base of the tree until christmas eve 8 do not use paper gauze like materials or other highly inflammable cloths for child ren s costumes 9 check carefully for burning cigarette butts after every party or gathering in your home 10 always turn out electric tree lights if room is unoccupied in festive mood as the weeks to christmas shrink into mere days that indefinable something in the air compounded of half suppressed excite ment and quickening expectancy makes itself increasingly felt gradually but inexorably the season exercises its magic spell over us all belated ly we dispatch the cards bedeck the tree and surreptitiously set about first buying end then hiding the family presents now where will they be safe this year irresistibly we find ourselves drawn into the choked department stores now trans formed to the inexpressible delight of young and old alike into glittering fairylands and there to the exultant strains of the hallelujah choius and the sweet simplicity of silent night children once again discover that in such surroundings parents aunts and uncles are as clay to the potter am this it is true is the materialistic aspect of the festival but come the day itself crowded churches and the faces of children as they gaze in wbnder on the nativity scene will go far to refute the fashionable charge that commercialism has obscured the real significance of christmas as for the scrooge like christmas means nothing to me types we all encounter they we suppose are as inevitable as death and taxes but the rest of us will not take them too seriously whatever they may say to the contrary we know very well that the fes tival cannot thus be dismissed after all if the dickensian grouch him self couldnt put christmas to rout what possible chance have they got reaction to danger an irrational side of human behaviour shows strongly in our reaction to danger not only does man tend to have an unrea sonmg fear of the unknown he has a dread of the ntfw or the unusual hazard that is often right out of proportion to the real danger the news that a sm- 1 section of the cran berry crop had been contaminated in a way that might affect the health of someone who ate a large quantity of the fruit became a leading topic right across the north american continent and affected the buying decisions of millions of housewives the news that a dozen babies had suffocated m canada in the first half of 1959 through the mis use by adults of thin plastic film led to headlines and some almost hystencal demands for government intervention obviously we should take proper steps to face up to every newlydiscovered hazard but points out the ontario safety league widespread excitement over these new dangers with the seeming indifference to it becomes illogical whn we contrast the far greater penis such as mis handled automobiles which k 1 three thousand canadians every year discovery of a bottl of arsen c m the bathroom closet would throw any parent into a near panic ma y other vf se respon
