decade of development the good old days tonight ushers in not ust a new year bv an entirely new decade tomorrow the 1960s wll be upon us as we reflect on what lies ahead it s impossibie to pol sh the crystal ball to bring clearly into line those events and activ tees ihet will be the ner decade predictions surround us on increasing populations changes m living and travel varying in fluenoss that will affect our national and international way of life economic patterns ifeet could change our entire way of life they re many and varied the predictions at this tune of year but all our predictions mus be based on that which has gone before as most crystal gazers must tvrh a look at the decade ust past lends credence to the optimistic outlook ahead this town and area has had mere growth expansion and progress tn the past decade than during any otner pnav ous ten year period installation of sewage treatment facilities near the beginning of the decade appeared to be with the general upsurge in develop ment the key that led to increas ng popuia t on the houses to accommodate it ahd the ndustry to employ it it s difficult to recount all the measures that tebve been planned and earned out during that t me indeed when they are totalled as we plan to do for a special issue this month we feel certain that some of the trends that will be revealed will rightly label the 1950s as the decade of development population increases have only been the stepping stone our community and cultural facilities have similarly been increased new schools have been built new organizations formed new activities introduced and the whole complexion of the town has under gone the greatest hange we are often scornful of the progress our community makes from day to day yet a backward glance can often reveal an im pressive stcry t welcoming the new year not everyone celebrates the beginning of the new year on january i but people in all parts of the worid have special cus toms to insure that the new year will get off to a good start church services and frantic parties for example are typical ways of celebrating in canada in many european countries gifts are exchanged on new year s day the custom originated wrm the romans back m 747 bc reportedly they presented the kmg of the sabines with branches of bay and palm trees consecrated to strenia the god dess of str the stfenae or g fts be came more elaborate in expectation of royal favor and the emperors came to regard them as deserved tribute augustus caesar is said to have passed the word along that he had a vision in which he saw himseif receiving grfts from the senate and the people on january i claudius finally stopped the infiuence- peddtmg by limiting the cost of gifts henry iii introduced the custom into england m the 1200 s and el zabefh i col leered enough loot to replenish her ward robe for a year the custom went out w th oliver cromwell in scotland bad luck s n store for a family f the f rst person to set foot n me house on new year 5 day is a woman or a gravechgger or a oerson wrio walks w th his roes turned n or a man with red or blonde ha r to minimize the nsv the scots appoint a tail dark man as the first footer on new year 5 day ne enters eacn house n s lence places a bunde or naggos on me f re then wishes me family good luck even the poorest chinese buy new shoes for the holiday because tt rs bad luck to step down on the ground nto old shoes on new year s day and the portuguese ignore their debts because the man who pays a bill on this day will pay out money all year the brazil ans open the new year by expressing the hope of all men they designate january 1 as the day of universal brotherhood canada 1960 a steady rise in economic buoyance can be expected next year throughout most of canada that is the heartening predict on which can be drawn from the economic in dicators in this country and the united states of course we cannot predict what w ii happen should the world become involved tn a major war or even a minor one if there be such thing any more but there is no use planning on disaster canada has come through fifteen years of unprecedented growth through a mas sive immigration movement and one of the h birth rates tn the world the cana- dtan population has been given a tremendous increase this in turn has resulted in shift ng of gears in economic life demands have tripled for new roads and highways schools and hospitals dams and hydro power canadians have been building new homes in the nun dreds of thousands w ih all the asoc ated maor outlays on furniture and furnishings the country has gone through a breath er spell for the past year investment in capital outlay has been high but not at the record rates we have become accustomed to now we feel canada is readying itself for a new spurt of expansion in major pro jects as welt as a steadily increasing home market for everything from bacon to fjfnnt tng presses the acton free press rablfafc by law
