i york hotel toronto at a special comments on taxes acton council has again this year come up with a very satisfactory tax rate by which it will finance the town through 1966 while the overall rate is increased 8 a and 76 mills this was only to be expected when we are faced every day with increases in the cost of all goods and services education this year appears to ajear the brunt of the responsibility for the rate increases by registering 8 5 and 77 mill hikes qnly other increase was in the county of halton levy with a fractional raise 2 mills up 34 per cent over its 1965 amount the portion of taxes known asjbe general rate which council controls dropped 3 mill which has no significance except it is lower than 1965 whether it might have been better in the long run to accept a three to five pev cent raise in the general rate as well will be decided in later years it would appear that an increase would have been in order if only to maintain the same level of service and a catching up on badly needed maintenance of municipal facilities which were neglected over many years and to meet the obvious increases in the cost of labor and supplies it may be expected that over the years the tax rate will increase if not this year then next year we feel that it is perhaps a good idea to increase the taxes a little each year so that an orderly pattern will develop rather than put off a tax increase one year to be followed by a rather large ump in succeeding years there are undoubtedly many who will not share this view but we must be realistic and realize that as long as the ability to pay a little more in taxes exists taxes will rise to take care of that situation arm of the church an historic milestone is being commemor ated this week as the five millionth scripture is placed in circulation by the gideons internation al in canada a beautiful goldcovered bible will be presented to the management of the royal i function on saturday april 23 travellers hospital patients prison inmates and many others are aware of the activities of the gideons but few know how this organiza tion started its worldwide operations a bedtime conversation between two chris tian salesmen who were sharing a room in a crowded hotel led to the founding of the well- known lay movement in 1899 today there are 22700 members in 73 countries 2150 of these unembers are cana dians organized into 1 69 local branches called camps members work quietly and unobstru- sively in their communities seeking to give a spiritual and moral uplift to others gidegns themselves voluntarily provide about 30 per cent of the canadian budget of 400000 the balance comes from interested christian friends and through the operation of a memorial bible plan thefirst bibles were placed in a canadian hotel by the gideons in 191 1 by 1962 the first million copies had been distributed the three millionth milestone was reached in 1961 indicat ing the ceaseless activity of this modern gideon army internationally four million scriptures are distributed yearly a maor program in canada involves the annual presentation of more than 200000 new testaments with psalms and proverbs to grade 5 public school children and thousands of bibles have been placed in the dormitory rooms of college and university students a ladies auxiliary present attractive white bound testa ments to student nurses as a consequence of their scripture place ment activity the gideons receive a steady flow of letters from persons who have experienced spiritual help the writers are old folk and youngsters drunks and drys saints and sinners but all with the same basic message thank you gideons look upon themselves as an arm of the christian church helping to carry out christs great commission to take
