1 tiiwtyany harness maker george edwards tri business here over 50 years the districts last harness maker george edwards died at age 92 on october 22 he passed away at his home 19 church st e and although he had been in failing health snice jan uary his last illness was brief the wellliked harness maker had lived in acton for over so years- he was born august 5 1874 at woodvale but moved to acton before the turn of the century he married the former minnie statham in 1899 they had one daughter lucy mrs harvey walters with whom he had been making his home jhfe worked at storey glove shop and the tannery for a while many years ago he started his trade in 1910 in alston when horses dominat- ed the roads he had learned harness making in port huron michigan before setting up shop here he moved his shop three or four times but he was always in the same main area of the town he first located in a small building at the rear of the dominion hotel in 1938 he decided to give up business in a big way but still kept a small shop at the back of his home with his daughter and soninlaw later in 1963 he officially retired ias harness makers became more difficult to find customers would come from farther away to seek his services always bright and cheerful in his shop mr edwards will long be re membered by those who have lived here for many years at the time he was active in business many of his custom ers were children who toted toy gun belts with loose straps or buckles that required mending they were never turned down and never charged imr edwards was fond of children and always had a kind word for them many of these youngsters now adults will re call the kind acts performed for them by the harness maker he was an ambassador of goodwim andvalways bore a smile on his face although there were times when many would scowl his store was always a meeting place for friends and many a conversation was car ried on sitting around the stove or with patrons perched on the counter top until his eyesight failed he was an avid reader of the free press in recent years his daugh ter read it to him funeral service was held at the rumleyshoemaker funeral home on monday october 24 at 3 pm conducted by the rev a h mclgenzie interment was in fairview cemetery pallbear ers were dave hopkins jack holmes harry hofstcde ray webster winner fryer and grif fin sprowl surviving him as well as tennial library were given mem bers of unit three of the unit ed church women at their meet ing in the church wednesday evening of last week guest speaker miss esther taylor number three librarian as she termed herself delighted the group with her humorous recol lections and answered many questions on the new facilities a group of acton gentlemen formed the first library board in 1894 and the off from the georgetown plant and yvas photographed by two movie companies one shot by tdf advertising agency will be shown at the ontario pavilion of expo 67 as one of a series showing the scope of industry in ontario the other shot by the nation al film board will be shown at the paris air show next year this film demonstrates the variety of aircraft manufactur ed in canada acton firefighters doused a blaze friday at acton dump when flames spread through nearby grass causing alarm to nearby residents during their weekly practice session monday night firefight ers received a phone call when the nassagaweya dump was burning out of control the truck was dispatched to the scene with several firefighters to pour gallons of water on the blaze the siren didnt sound for the monday alarm as fire
