step it introduces the possibility of more color ful issues it will permit sharp photographlike reproduction of the pictures and it opens up new avenues to advertisers in the preparation of their mes sages i this weeks issue was pro duced ion a new three unit goss community web offset press one of the most modem pieces pf printing equipment in use today the 22 foot long sa fool high 10 ton machine rolls off a 12 page section at the rate of 12000 an hour the new press which will provide the use of up to four colors is a giant step forward from our former flatbed letter press itself only 10 years old so what la ofbet most people are familiar with the old style of printing by letter press lines of rajsed type cast from molten lead were locked in 100 pound page forms and placed on the press a series of rollers applied ink to the type and tha pressed against the inked type to print for direct contact offset printing is different the news columns pictures and ads are pasted on a full page adver tiser decided that acton should have a newspaper he assembled the necessafy equip ment for printing a newspaper and set up shop in a building known then as mathews hall at the corner of mill and wil low streets where the old post office now sits the build ing has long since been moved and is presently occupied by hotchens bakery the first issue of the acton free press came out on do minion day 1875 after two years of printing in the mat hews hall building a new building adjoining this was er ected and for two more years publications came from there prior to the newspaper moving to the site occupied for 80 years on mill street now oper ating as dills stationery store the first piece of machinery to be used was a paper cutter all the type was set by hand in 1904 the mill st building was completely remodelled and enlarged a steam boiler was fired every day to operate an old prouty newspaper press in 1930 a babcock newspaper press arrived and in 1949 an other addition was added to the building from time to time new pie- jces of printing equipment were added until 1957 when a new goss coxotype press for printing the paper was pur- first home of the free press chased in 1959 this press along with other equipment was moved to the present site of the acton free press on wil low st in the building form erly occupied by baxter labor atories and earlier by mason knitting mills there have been but five edi tors in its 91 years of being actons only newspaper jos eph hacking sold the paper in 1877 to moore and galbraith and in 1879 the moore bro thers t a and hp formed free press it was at that time a partnership to operate the the mill st location was oc cupied in 1927 the late g a dills purchased the business in 1954 a limited company was formed with the late g a dills as president david dills as vicepresident and james dills as secretarytreasurer as a limited company the busi ness continued to grow and several new pieces of printing equipment were added in january
