weather on the weekend discouraged most of the maple rock trap shooters from attending for the weekly competitions the only mem ber brave enough to face the chilly weather was wayne leadston and the biting wind didnt help him any since his scores 16 and 14 were well below his usually good aver age the acton high school stu dents who are forming a gun club met on saturday morning for their first shooting compe tition one suggested name for the club is centennial sharpshooters and it has been suggested they become af filiated with cijl and shoot for badges that the company provides this weeks scores were as follows cord reed 94 out of 100 jim mckeown 86 john grace 84 al thompson 78 dave broostad 69 nigel spio er 45 and ken mccall 29 the scores are quite good consider ing its the boys first shoot at the new club as chrtsimas approaches some local boys will be asking for and getting their first gun for christmas there is much disagreement on the age when a boy should get his first gun some could use good sense in the use of a firearm at the age of 10 or h while there are grown men many times mis age who are not yet competent in their use of firearms there are many things that will tip a watchful parent off as to their sons ability to safe ly use firearms if he shows a sense of responsibility to ward his duties homework and household chores and is careful in the use of other items that could be dangerous such as knives axes saws or whathaveyou then he is of an age when he could be taught to use firearms with the caution that is due so deadly a weapon there is no set age when a boy or man can be trust ed to use good judgment and common sense in the use of firearms these things dont come natural they have to be taught the yearly list of gun accidents indicates that some men never learn the proper respect for firearms until it is too late sometime between the ages of 10 and 16 mosr boys can be given their first gun pro viding they are given the train ing that should go along with it start him out with target practice and safe gun handling lessons and gradually work up to that big day in his life when he is given his first gun of his own from that point it is just a matter of rime till he can be trusted to go out by himself and use the gun as if you were looking over his shoulder every minute the main thing is the train ing withoutit a boy and a gun make a dangerous combin ation if guns were sold with a complete course in safe gun handling included there would be no reason whv everv bo v a t e robert j gregg ton school boaid trustee m nassagaweya
