speaker stresses early treatment essential to recovery from cancer reminiscing about early canada dear sirs as this is canadas year and for this st patricks day i shall reminisce about canada and the many changes i have seen taking place in the few short years we have been here when we came here this was then a remote area there was no electricity in the area which meant few accommodations pumping water by hand light ing the oil lamps ironing with the crude coal stove irons was the way of life as living goes today with all our modern con veniences this would have been classed a very severe complicated and impossible road to travel but people were used to it and in spite of the drawbacks it had its rewards in that overhead expenditure was low horses were still in use on moat of the farms and it was a pleasant sight to watch a team of horses work whether they were on the plough or wagon the winters seemed to be more severe in those days but i suppose not really as they are better equipped today to handle conditions in deed horses were a very useful and convenient animal to have around for emergencies such as helping to start the old car or bringing in supplies and ne cessities when the roads were snowed in the little red school house was part of the rural scene these small schools had their merits in their day in that the children were happy attending them and seemed to do well u th4c studies this wai due co the fact that a homelike atmos- phere prevailed my fondest recollections of the stone school were the annual field days and the christmas concerts noth ing elaborate about this enter tainment just local talent bul we all looked forward and en joyed them immensely noth ing remains but the happy memories of course we real ize these school would not ac commodate todav and we are proud of the many beautiful schools that dot our landscape strange as it may seem there was more time to visit our neighbors in those davs this is hard to explain in this mod ern dav and age but i sup pose we will lust have to blame tv these are a few of- the manv changes i have seen since re siding here it is hard to en vision what the future will bring but we hope canada re mains a prosperous nation happv centennial year sincerely catherine graham praise for manor executive staff editors note the fol lowing letter was received by reeve herbert c merry of oakvillechairman of the hal- ton centennial manor board dear sir i am writing to express my gratitude for the manner in which my parents have been treated by all persons con cerned with their recent en try into halton centennial manor from their first interview with mrs kirkwood at the burlington welfare office the medical examination to the fi nal day of moving they have been treated with dignity and warmth bv your staff and ex ecutives what was anticipated as an ordeal has been made a happy adventure for them and this has very definitely been reflec ted in their health and out look the 50th anniversary party staged for them by the manor executive and staff was a wonderful day for them and it is hard to believe that any institution can possibly be so warmhearted mr allen and mr wright must have been handpicked for their amazing ability to be friend and comfort aged and sometimes hostile guests the manor shpuld be held up as a shining example of what a progressive adminis tration can accomplish al though your staff can never be duplicated in deep appreciation c w cnttrter jr c a 9 5 west east s 7 4 s 10 h 10 9 6 2 h 8 5 3 d o j 9 5 3 d 10 8 4 2 c k 7 c q j 10 8 2 south would have disco vered the same information north and south are indeed unfortunate their hands are identical in distribution if ei ther had one less club and one more diamond or even if one had one more heart there would be no problem howev er with this distribution it looks like two club losers for sure west leads the queen of dia monds and dummy goes down declarer must plan his play it never pays to give up so declarer should look for an al ternative to giving up two club tricks there is one hope if either east or west have exactly two clubs and can be persuaded to win the second club
