september 16 1838 the rather of james j was james hill who earner to eramosa in 1829 with his par- ents in 1833 he married anne dunbar and they moved to so acres near rockwood or as it was then known brothers- town in the early 1840s james j attended a private school op erated by mrs william north a sister of john harris a room of their house served as the schoolroom and was known as brothers tom seminary on wednesday morning february 24 1847 the home and schciolhouse of mr and mrs north the chief seat of learning in wellington county was completely- destroyed by fire and a new school and house was erected in no time at all from logs cut and haul ed by the neighbors to the vil lage later the north family gave up teaching and james j hill received his final education at the academy and manitoba railway 1879 and hill was successively its general manager 1879817 vicepresident 188182 and president 188290 in 1890 the system became known as the great northern railway co i of which hill was presid ent 18901907 and chairman of the board of directors 1907- 12 hill was an aggressive ef ficient organizer personally honorable but often ruthless in his business dealings un der his administration the st paul minneapolis and manito ba was extended to puget sound and placed in direct communication with the or ient through the organization of the great northern steam ship co hills railroads have been cited as the cause of a trem endous migration from eur ope the influx of immigrants was more a matter of business efficiency than love as indic ated in hills letter to his part ner lord mount stephen it is- our best interest to give low rates and do all we can to help the country and create business after a dramatic struggle with edward h harriman hill acquired partial control or the northern pacific rail road 1896 and or the chica go burlington and qulncy railroad 1901 in 1901 he or ganized the northern securit ies co as a holding company for all his corporations the government proceeded against it in 1903 and in 190 the supreme court ordered it dissolved as being in violation of the sherman antitrust act besides serving as director of several railroads james j hill was director of the first national banks of new york city chicago and st paul 1912 and gave liberally to many institutions his benefac tions including a gift of 1500- 000 to establish a roman ca tholic theological seminary in st paul and 1500000 for the roman catholic cathedral in that city he wrote highways to pro gress 1910 and a brief his tory of the great northern railway system 1915 the james j hill professorship of transportation was set up at harvardin1915 endowed by 74 of his friends and admir ers and so the pioneer settle ment of brotherstown gave a railway genius to the world in
