department long an set to the town the town of acton i is proud of its volunteer fire depart ment composed of a fire chief assistant chief 3 captains and 5 firefighters this body of 30 trained men are on duty 24 hrs a day although volunteer in name this body of dedicated men are highly trained in the most mo dern methods of fire fighting to attain this efficiency they practice faithfully each week under the watchful eye of their captain instructors every opportunity to attend out of town instruction cours es are taken bv individual fire fighters who upon returning do their utmost to pass this valuable information along to their brother firefighters once each month usually the first monday time is taken out to gather in a group and this pe riod is used to carry on a bust- ess session during which the details necessary to make a fire department function are ironed out and new plans laid for the future actons fire fighting equip ment has always been of the type to meet the modern de mand and keep abreast with the latest firefighting techniques this year they were fortunate to add to their equipment one new fire pumper which brings their quota up to three very efficient pieces of fire fighting equipment fully equipped one of these fire fighting pumpers belongs to the acton mick holmes chief rural area and although man ned by the acton department is housed m the acton fire hall and used to fight rural area fires with a contingent of 8 fire fighters as drawn up in a agree ment with the councils of erin nassagaweva and esquesing townships maintenance of the fire hall is carefully looked after by the fire department with cleaning waxing repairing any general additions just recently a bright new flag pole and flag were ad ded to the hall and the under taking of taking down the old fire bell from the town hall belfry and after cleaning it up it was decided to place it on a cairn outside the hall as a cen tennial project dating back to 1800s this will be quite an addition to the ap pearance of the acton fire hall and will no doubt create quite a sensation to anyone who re members the old method of an nouncing a fire today six fire phones are lo cated in the homes of firefight ers onemn the town office and one at beardmore and co when a call comes in to 8931212 all six phones ring but are an swered by the first person to pick up one after complete in formation has been received re garding the fire that person presses forward a switch which is close at hand and which in turn activates the sirens one of which is located atop force electric and one at the town hall the first firefighter to reach the hall picks up the fire phone in the hall and upon receiving the message he quickly jots down the location of the fire on a nearby blackboard for the benefit of the reporting fire- trucks are quickly dispatch ed to the fire destination and a close contact is kept between trucks and hall by means of a radio one of which is installed in each truck and a base sta tion in the hall these radios are also in con tact with milton georgetown burlington and oakville through a mutual aid agreement and extra fire fighting equipment may be drawn from these towns if deemed necessary the acton firefighters also find time to help children in the community working with scouts sponsoring hockey teams aiding muscular dystro phy and are continually travel ing throughout the area show ing slides and preaching the neverending words of fire safe ty fmenohters inskct damaoe at hts marzo glove co manufacturers of fine quality leather gloves and mitts duby looks at acton we all realize that we are liv ing in a fast changing world therefore it is the responsibil ity of each one of us to keep up i with the changing times we cant on the one hand stress the need for advanced ed ucation and meet its ugh costs of today to train our younger generation without surely re cognizing that we must constant ly update our own knowledge so that the administration of a municipality is conducted in a manner appropriate to a well- run business the methods of 50 years ago are not adequate today todays municipal official must continu ally acquaint himself with the advances that are taking place because running a municipality is big business and our admin istrative staffs require as high a degree of knowledge and skill as does any other flourishing modernday enterprise your council is or should bej the municipalitys board of dir ectors setting policy and seeing thai it is carried out municipal administration due to change nae become a complex businessj there is no such thing as a learn ed man just learning men to be sure we all know many people who hate had the op portunity of extensive education and to this point they are ery vvell informed but in the broad sense we are never through learning and to meet the chal lenge of change on the munici pal front we must all be prepar ed to become better qualified lo do the job what is ahead for at for some ears now k6 have seen a stead well paced nor mal growth in our ion in fact in some years our population has remained constani or even decreased but we are no more immune to rapid growth than am other municipality if con ditions warrant it if and when this happens and it is almost in evitable let us hope that our people in authority at thai time will call on all the resources known and available to them to cope with this natural circum stance of modernda living let us take for instance an industrial inquiry re locating in acton and we have had quite a few one of the first questions asked is what facilities and interests does our town have for our employees who will have to come here i we could never sa we had an adequaie library facility i but now we can another important query is do you have ade quate housing for our once again we could onv po but this will change when i think of the light industries we may missed that could have employ ed our young female population which is an obvious need in acton today i can only suggest that we should move ahead in every area considering all things on their merit so that we can qualify for some of the pro gress we see around us and now fot some pointed comment 1 in aplte of some criticism to the contrary we have much better roads and streets than they have in some municipalit ies many times our sire 1 as you move about the country one of the first things that strikes you is the high qua lity of our drinking water by comparison 1 we also have one of the fin est municipal parks for any town our sire made possible mostly by nature and not at the expense of ratepayers 4 it is my sincere hope that your council will soon be able pie say mall have your boards be areas face weight then manner while our there is mayo l o duby reports on changing conditions within the municipality and outlines what you can expect in the future the acton mayor was honored this year with the chairmanship of both the town and village section of the influential ontario municipal association and the central ontario regional devel opment council staff photo to make possible adequate low rental accommodation for our senior citizens steps have al ready been taken 5 the jidlgliig program plan ned for fain lake this year should have a profound bene ficial effect on the town in many ways 6 i have had many calls and letters complimenting acton and its people on their fine new library and hydro facilities i offer the board and commission my personal thanks for a job well done 7 i would like to see the relat ed section of the planning act amended soon to make possible more flexible planning for small towns who are endeavoring to comply with official plans i will be advocating this through the town and village section of the omjl 8 with the full knowledge that it will take approximately two yearsto complete the ad dition to our sewage treatment plant it is to be hoped there will be no unnecessary techni calities to hamper its progress it must proceed with haste be cause it is vital to the expected development in our town 9 we are also endeavoring to make possible a lowcost hous ing program for the benefit of the lower income citizens of ac ton inquiries are made and the possibilities will soon be known 10 in general i would just like lo sav that to be a progress ive and thriving community
