printing anec dotes ot actons early days this week we ran into some thing that rightly belongs to ripley terry waterhouse reading a book named stranger than science by frank edwards came across an article about acion which supposedly took place in october 1693 the scene accor to the story was the brown and hall saw mills somewhere in acton men were sawing a urge log and had just finished taking a slice out of the outside when they came to a dark spot in the wood fearing a piece of steel or foreign material embedded which would dull the saw they stopped it to investigate the dark spot turned out to be a cavity in the log inside the smooth inside of the cavity was a large toad alive and well the use was approximately 200 years old and measure ments indicated the cavity was 60 feet above ground thirty inches of wood encased the toad which had smoothed out the inside apparently attempt ing to get osil- thc phenomenon was sup posed to have taken place in acton ontario in october 1893 a search through free press hies for that period revealed no information although a brown saw mill advertised has anyone heard the story before can they vouch for iu authenticity
