mr mrs s g bennett hosts at acton 4h calf club meeting on monday july 10 mr and mrs s g bennett played host to the members of acton 41 calf club at their beautiful scotsdale farm rft 1 george town president bill lasby led the members in the recitation of the 4h pledge and called on the secretary catharine lasby to read the minutes of the pre vious meeting and call thcvroll a committee was chosen to plan and prepare a float for the acton fair parade in his introduction of the hosts club leader nino braida briefly reviewed the history of scotsdale farm since its estab- uhment in 1937 he told the members that the worldfam ous herd of scotch shorthorm cattle was founded on the best blood lines available in their native scotland he said that the aim of mr and mrs ben- net during the past 30 years was to constantly improve the quality of their favorite breed of beef cattle mr bennett welcomed the gathering on be- halt of mr bennett and the farm staff to start the program scots- dale manager emmerson clark and staff members raruded an excellent class of jgnior yearl ing bull for the 4-hekstc- judge prior to judging nino braida gave a detailed type demonstra tion pointing out the desirable features to look gr in judging a class of beef cattle senior member keith aitkcn gave the official placings and reasons a class of junior yearling heifers was also judged and all mem bers gave oral reasons for their placings- scoring reasons were geoff taylor club leader russell murray and a visiting leader bill wilson mr wilson acted as official judge for the lesson period geoff taylor led the members in a discussion in he testing polic ies for beef and dairy cattle in canada at the conclusion of the meeting refreshments were served by the hosts catherine lasb orv fittingly con tcstants took part in the com petition each of ihem was re quired to judge classes of oats barley rod cloei ha straw berries and apple- reasons were given on ha apples and oats contestants were divid ed into three groups according to participation in previous contests novui foi tluxse who had noer taken pari in such a contest junior for members under 16 and senioi over sixteen wars of age conjunction with the seed judging competition and all secondyear members were required to exhibit four quart boxes- of strawberries jeijil their patch these berries were later sold by auction the top price was 2 paid by acton 4h club leader nino braida for four quarts of stuart nurses strawberries t stuart had the c exhibit of strawber- rtat- by h j stanley in this our centennial year we tend to look back over the history of many of our organ izations 4h club work start ed in 1919 in halton with the formation of a calf club the 28 members borrowed 150 to 250 from the bank at six per cent interest to purchase their beef heifer on august 20 a field day and sale of the heif ers was held in oakville 4h clubs have been active since then with the exception of four years in the 1920s over 4500 projects have been taken in 235 clubs by farm boys and girls in halton in 45 years of activity the types of projects have changed over the years in the early days swine garden for estry grain and tractor clubs were popular now these have been replaced by 4h conserva tion electric strawberry and forage clubs in addition to corn calf and sheep clubs some of the 4h agricultural club projects such as conser vation and electric are design ed for older club members during the past half century halton 4h members have con tributed greatly to- farming to agriculture in general and to industry 4h club leaders are assuming more responsibility each year and are greatly re sponsible for the success of fl in halton halton 4h club work will continue to change and pro gress in step with the rest of our agriculture doreen harrop is bus trip winner by geoff taylor the eastern ontario and quebec bus trip sponsored by the junior farmers association ot ontario is held annually with participants from all coun ties in ontario doreen harrop daughter of mr and mrs allan harrop rit 2 norval has been awarded this trip to take place august 1319 inclusive doreen has completed 10 4h honiemaking club projects and in addition has held var ious executive positions in her homemaking clubs she is ac tive in junior farmer work as a member of the norval junior institute her hobbies include sewing reading cooking and swimming and she is presently enrolled at the brampton busi ness college while on this trip doreen will visit points of in terest in eastern ontario and quebec including expo 67 the halton womens institute is providing financial assistance to doreen for this trip wet weather hay is rotting m fields the wet weather of the past few weeks is taking its toll on haltons hay crop
