parties and dances clerk administrator j mc- geachle informed council last night he received a phone call from me rubin corporation in forming the town they might attach the validity of the existing bylaw on the wording of the side yard variance at the ontario municipal board hearing in the council chambers monday dec 18 the qmb will hear appeals from the rubin corporation and sesto construction against a decision of the committee of ad justment at the hearing the clerk explained council had registered no objection to the rubin application for a variance but he felt if the rubin corpora tion attached the bylaw it may put a different complexion on the case mr mcgeachle felt the town should have legal aid to support the bylaw at the hearing reeve hlnton said it was no concern of councils however ii there are weaknesses in the omb hearing word was r wed- nesday that the ontario munich pal board hearing on the town toning bylaw will be held in the council chambers on wednesday january 3 at 11 sum bylaw he urged council to make sure they arnot in the new one councillor drlnkwalter object ed saying it was unfair to leave it to the clerk to defend the bylaw the reeve said the case was the same as the closing bylaw which the magistrate ruled illegal and threw out i disagree said mr drink- waiter 1 think a solicitor should represent the town not the clerk 1 dont believe in wasting the towns money on unnecessary legal fees the reeve said no appeals can be made on the decision councillors were told they took no action question addition to mz bennett lad struck atmihmaih suffers school board to restate their case for an addition to the mz ben nett school prompted by the clerkadminis trator who said he had read the report of a recent school board meeting in the free press sev eral times to absorb its full import several councillors ad mitted they were alarmed i took it from the report said mr mcgeachle that the only way we can get approval for the addition is by closing down three rooms in the stone school mayor les duby said he also had read the report and felt the onus was on the board to make a decision the clerk suggested that per haps council should contact the board to give an explanation at the report reeve hlnton said he had taken serious note of the matter and would feel better if the school board gave council an explana tion l kn there conge in the schools it could be paid for by a much larger assessment if they wait a year for a county board he suggested more assessment to pay for our addition said dr cakes but we in turn pay for additions in other towns it balances out a lot of money has been spent in the last three or four years to renovate the stone school re minded the clerk we supported the addition to the school here because the facta and figures presented by the school board have proven the need to us said the mayor the clerk agreed the department sometimes was only concerned with the present if you check youll find out the department has cost us money too on occa sion remarked the mayor the reeve however felt the inspectors judgment was sup erior to councils on school board we have a duty to reconfirm the decision he stated wh a letter from the secretary of the committee of adjustment iain williams advised acton cornell three members of the committee presented him with an account for car allowance in the amount of 35 each tor their work during the year he asked if council would authorise pay- acting on the recommendation of no 1 committee at their meet ing last night tuesday council lors rejected the payment after dtttatlng an amendment proposed by councillors masales and drlnkwalter which would have allowed the committee members to draw payment from their own tends it is my recommendation they be paid said councillor drlnk walter committee of adjust ment has had a busy year with a lot of applications to review id be prepared to recommend they be paid 35 each i dont think this is asking too much what about everybody else knocking on the door asked councillor t tyler we certainly should be sym pathetic bat where are we going to get the money asked coun cillor masajes its not budget- tea tor ton can find 1100 for the library oafldtalrtghtanswered mr drlnkwalter the mayor asked the clerk if it was possible for the committee to pay themselves out of their own budget bat the clerk said the act states it may be paid at the discretion ot council which is empowered to pay only normal operating expanses when a resolution waspresent- ed later in the meeting and me amendment proposed reeve hln- ton said the 35 just amounted to a bee for attending meetings since mileage must be an item ised amount of miles travelled the mayor was also opposed mr drlnkwalter and mr mas- ales suggested this is an ex ceptional year but the library board also had an exception year and so have some otherboards and committees he reminded councillors as the reeve suggested this thing could have no limit the mayor continued councillor drlnkwalter said members of the committee were looking at adjoining municipal ities where men were receiving fees for sitting on the committee of adjustment it was agreed council would consider unusual outofpocket expenses no 1 committee min utes read showed that at the beginning of the year council re fused to pay members a per diem rate for their work the
