yours sincerely w sheremeta director student research bureau abolition and french sometimes when you listen to the news from radio or tv you have to wonder what kind of men comprise the great body that sit in the canadian parliament at ottawa back a matter of some 10 years ago two men paid the supreme penalty for murdering a policeman one of them took 25 minutes to die that to some people was an awful thing it started a wave of abolition of the death penalty nobody thought of the days and days sargeant tong laid and suf fered before he died then wilfred coffin shot and killed three men in the northern bushlands took their possess ions never once said he did not kill them but the kind hearted abolitionists brought out a plea that he might be innocent and that he should not have been punished for it then peter truscott was tried and convicted for the murder of a teenage girl years later some woman wrote a book claiming he did not get a fair trial did she write that book to get fame or was it because of a desire to see peter truscott get justice claiming he did not get a fair trial if the trial was unfair the fault lays with canadian justice bills to abolish capital punish ment have been introduced in parliament at least one came before the house to retain it only in case a police officer or a prison guard was shot or killed now i have all the regard for policemen and prison guards but i think that a policeman with a gun in a holster at his side handy to reach should not get any more protection than the un armed citizen a policeman chasing an armed bank robber or prison guard knows what he is up against a little girl on her way to school is not supposed to know that under a bridge or behind a tree there may be a human fiend lurking there to leave her dead and outraged or her heart stric ken family to mourn over and pay taxes to feed and clothe the heartless wretcn mat caused it all now we have a conflab on for the french language with a brill iant idea to go to prance for teachers now there have been people of french descent in canada speak ing the french language since the ladles guild of st alb ans church catered to a bounti ful annual christmas turkey dinner on december 1 to nearly 80 members of the acton golden age club and a few of their honored guests the tables were beautifully decorated in the christmas theme and tall red lighted evening was passed unfortunately some members are still ailing and un able to be present away back in the days of la salle and frontenac before wolfe gave up his life to take quebec for the british nation and if they cant teach french then what advantage in teaching it at all better let quebec go as an ln- dependant nation than penalize the whole dominion of canada to keep them in confederation
