a pot shot at education halton county board of education trustee bill lawson told etqueting council monday slight he was retpondutl o a even point submission advocating a reduction in salaries of trustees and educators and a hold on teachers salaries which council tent to the board and all municipal councils in the county last week mr lawson went on to u it was obvious critics had not attended any board meetings and that in the future the authors of criticism should be well informed if they expect their suggestions to be in any way meamngeul the reduction of board members fees to si 500 with no mileage allowance coming from a council which in w increased its own honorarium by 100 does not teem relative to me he continued on the subject of teacher salines mr lawson told council the board is in a competitive market for personnel and must be prepared to meet the going salary rales he added that the board had not established these rates and alio that an ontariowide survey of administrative salaries showed halton county lo be in the middle range area mr lawson lashed out at a point in councils submission which suggested that teachers and boardemployees in many cases seek employment in these fields to avoid the competition of private business and to avoid any possible unemployment the statement by the author concerning the reasons for teachers seeking this type of employment is most damaamii to the morale of the profession and can only lead to negative relationship between the board and its staff and should therefore be retracted he said j4r lawson concludjajrj jti rebuttal by saying that meetings of the board are public and that he would be pleased lo see any councillor tn attendance i trust they would be better informed he said commenting on mr lawson t rebuttal councillor ken marshall author of councds seven point submission said well that will be very good if the ratepayers are satisfied with their next tax bill reeve george currie answered mr lawsons statement that council increased its own honorarium by 100 while this council doubled its pay its only half what youre getting he contended now who works harder mr lawson whose salary on the board is j 3 000 a year explained that the township had only one representative on board of education while council had five representatives if you can prove to us that you do more than the five of us then were wilting to pay you reeve currie replied i can tell you this mr reeve 60 of my free time is taken up with board business mr lawson retorted councillor russell miller who served with mr lawsuu on tne old township school board said he thought the township board was better than the present county system we had this shoved down our throats because some areas wouldnt keep up with the times he said however councillor miller admitted that mr lawsons job was not an easy one deputyreeve tom hill added that council was not criticuing the work mr lawson was doing pertorkally as a representative of etqucsing v f know youre only one voice in the wilderness he said deputy reeve hill recalled asking minister of education william davis if he didnt think 30000 was loo high a salary for the boards top employee he told us he thought they would have had to pay 50000 councillor miller recalled ive got a different opinion of his opinion too the reeve declared at least one member of council the deputyreeve indicated his intention lo become belter informed about the boards work if i have a free night on a thursday 111 be there at their meeting he promised hamiiton oftomitcitt i 16 mountamvie
