had your tool my trip that b mine m aouth of the border and u in some sense a freedom from th drudgery and orrjirsarines of life your may have been othenriaa that fa the trip that young people call a real trip and that their parerru dread for them the escape into oblivion you know what ivn driving at the drug problem in ill ita faceia and thia editorial desire to look the issue straight in the eye no nonsense style first lets be honest we do have drug problem in alton whether it be mammoth or minute u not the question if there be but one case of it its a relevant issue prom the parents who pop their plus la face the world to the teens who sniff smoke pot or ride the amphetamine railroad into nowhere its now this isnt intended as any scare tactic parents to be honest the problem la minute in acton cod help ui that it stay that way nonetheless there have been pot parties when patents have been away and there are kids who are on other kicks some persons say that it ii better that we dont talk about it dont speak about it arid it will disappear thats the ostrich stance which get one nowhere and allows the problem to run rampant a spark that blows into a mighty torrent second lets be realistic and admit that something can be done about the problem as nutter of fact something is already being done about it to the immense credit of the guidance department and health department of the acton high school a program of education and involvement is wall underway facts ate being given to the teens and they are discussing them in an open and honest way our kids areni the add heads we might like to think they are by and large they are a decent and intelligent group who care for a sense of community and decency and i fully believe they will listen to reason at least 99 will but the parents thats a different story did you notice the number of rifrtt jjrcss mapu avbilw euufrst ommch ii maple ave georgetown pastor rev robert c lehnea sunday november 30th 1 alee t our tiacer there to talk about the problem with their teens it was a pathetic showing to say the least and yet we stand on the sidelines and criticize our teens two things have come out of the involvements f have had with the drug scene thus far both from counselling contacts with teen who have di it with me and also from participating in the high school program the first thing that is evident to me is that the teenager want the truth and further they will listen toll when given in an unemotional way if we insist on calling it sin and bad and immoral then acton forget ill youve lost the battle now the second thing and something that can demand our immediate attention is that these teens and parents st the meeting were demanding the creation of some sort of drop in centre where these teens can be themselves and discuss their thing without the censorship of society you and i demand that right for ourselves ie the hotel the legion the dub the church but we dont always give it to our children they want the right of a place the more dilapidated the better i suspect where they can gather and talk about their lives and have a coke and they dont want to exclude adults although they do want some say in whom the sdull supervisors should be who can blame them for that i suspect too that among the professional and concerned people of the town there are many who would willingly give their time to such a project if acton doesnt act in the very near future it may well become another georgetown or guelph or cod forbid yorkville while we have the chance let us become acton the action town and if you are looking for the ministerial bit in this its very simple these are children of god and what he demands of us is that we provide for all the opportunity of fullness of life and drugs etc isnt part of it thats all s chance to be whole complete persons in hit sight as christians im not sure that we have done our all for our kens church notices tvanoh ptntteottal taisrnacu paoc s3 rud whitlm d from the phone calls and letters received since mr benson the minister of finance released ms white paper on tax reform many people in my opinion believe that the contents of this document are to become law the while paper contains proposals only and while the proposals represent the thinking of the government nevertheless none of them can become law until they are incorporated into legislation presented to parliament and approved by that body- the purpose of a while paper is to evoke discussion especially on the put of the public and it this sunday evening in the rtlcjh school auditorium the churchmen quartette will perform again here this return enososment is sponsored bv the baptist hi fellowship mi be ad pinch hitter socks wit the hon william davis yanked a seasoned cinch hitter off the bench at the department of education and he came through with a timely hit to save a delicate situation at the triangl mens club dinner meeting thursday where mr davis was billed to speak commitments at queens park where the department of education estimates were being debated at an evening setiion kept the minister of education glued to his desk in his place came george leslie woodruff of burlington a director of the teacher education branch of the department he filled his bosss speaking engagement so well the almost capacity crowd at st albans ltixton hall forgot about the thorny issues of education mr woodruff a witty and engaging speaker spoke on the care and feeding of after dinner speakers he had the audience eating out of his hand with amusing anecdotes and a collection jof stories which think yo member fred new described ss 35 fcppef after mr woodruffs own description of how many claps a speech should receive although officials of the triangl club a merger of men from st albans anglican and trinity united churches were disappointed that mr davis could not appear they held out some hope from the message they received from the minister that he would try and make the scene some other time i had some questions i would have liked answers to admitted one member of the audience which was liberally sprinkled with teachers and educators but i suppose these things happen mr davis phoned his regrets at 4 run that afternoon introduced by wes beatty the pinch hitler outlined nine points organizations should remember about an after dinner speaker and gave full marks to his hosts thursday shying away from any educational issues which he candidly admitted he probably didnt have answers to anyway mr woodruff acknowledged affably that after dinner speakers were often self qualified experts qualified the efimtion of an expert is an sob from out of town with a brief case for the benefit of the gentlemen of the cloth here he nodded at club chaplains rev cordon turner and rev harry dawson an sob is a silly old bounder another definition an expert is like i lie bottom of a double boiler often steamed up without knowing whats cooking observations about after dinner speakers have your man in the right place and at the right time greet him pick a good spot for him to speak the better known the speaker the shorter the introduction if the jokes are good laugh dirty jokes don t laugh then the speaker reeled off a dirty russian joke lie picked up on a tour it was to clean everyone laughed if the speech is no good dont compliment the speaker me may repeat it somewhere else the speaker said with a grin final adviceget nd of him an cxofficcr in the army mr woodruff admitted he makes around 60 speeches a year a large gift from the club was accepted from club treasurer vic bristow meditation period followed conducted by rev harry dawson who compared the recent apollo 12 mission and the blackout consternation to life sometimes it takes a crisis to shock us he said space shots draw our attention to the unknown and the quest for the eternal mr new morality discussion the new morality a timely topic indeed is the subject for the fourth family life education meeting at the high school this thursday evening as well at students and their parents anyone interested is welcome to come to learn and discuss there will be a special opportunity to discuss a diopin centre for acton two films will be shown the game and love is fur the byrds the progrjm begins at 7 10 thursday evening in the high school pjst demand dawson declared and ihe secret of real living not the boredom and ennui associated with much of life today he quoted albert einstein who observed that the mysterious was the source of all true art and science the one yearold club wound up the meeting with decision time conducted by chairman bob hail and rev gordon turner put wells in bear pit annual meeting and election for ihe hilton west progressive conservative association will be held this friday nov 28 at 8 pm at lawrie smith public school burlington main feature of the meeting will be a bear pit discussion with the hon tom wells the hon robert l stanfield federal leader of the pc party will be guest speaker and tickets are on tale now at sis a person or 25 a couple the dinner wdl be held at the ettaminet restaurant burlington on feb 25 is from such discussion the government gets the feelings of the country to guide them in planning legislation they wish to introduce the benton white paper as a document did not contain many surprises as such almost every proposal had fit origin in the carter report published in 1967 which received wide publicity and discussion at that time and since the carter report hat been acclaimed throughout the world as ihe most comprehensive study of taxation ever attempted it was ihe jfirst serious effort to study methods of taxation used by governments at sources of revenue the purpose was also to seek wsys snd mesnt of spreading the tsx burden more evenly than at present and to plug ihe many loopholes that nave been unearthed over the years by astute students of taxation or as some call themselves tax experts the carter report was found to be loo severe in many of its recommendations its basic premise was a buck it a buck is a buck no matter its source and should be subject to taxation this basis for equitable taxation is fine in theory but it tacks f tactical realism in many areas lowever the carter report contained a wealth of information and was written with a great depth of thought it was from this report that the bensqn white paper had its origin and while the carter report was the result of ave years of extensive work the white paper added nine months of study to the ink now the minister of finance it asking canadians to give it further thought before preparing legislation if you have any thought or opinions whether approving or disapproving he is asking you to write to him and make hurt swate or them i will be pleased to receive your utters snd will see that they are rotwarded to the minuter of finance the honourable mr benton i have been appointed a
