be to run when the urcn blow maybe did his real name i hiilurd price will run for the fire hall the first few timet for a habit it not easily broken but hes retired now and there a real attachment there personal and satisfying that only those with 20 years on the acton brigade can appreciate friday night at the legion hall they presented did with a memento of hit long service to the brigade an axe buried deep in a block of wood with the autographs of his fellow firefighters on the handle there was also a long sleek coffee table with a big bow on it accompanying the axe for him to enjoy during retirement the brigade needs younger men he declares it was the axe that gave did the most pleasure although he appreciated the more sophisticated gift that axe brought back a lot of memories of the days when the late jim cooney was on the brigade for jim cooney was famous for his views on ventilation the axe was the tool that loosed the gates a burning building generated before it exploded they introduced me to the axe at one of the first fires i went to as a member of the brigade there were some shacks on fire and we hid to tear ihem apart with axes to get that fire out did remember i had lots of swing then and the axe was a familiar weapon he racalled and from that time on no nutter where i went or what happened it always seemed they were handing me the axe it is symbolic that the last thing the boys did was hand me an axe he grinned as he grasped the handle of the shiny new fire axe it occupies a place of honor in his willow st home now an object of many memories and my memories of 20 year on the brfeade tlart back in may 1949 when i signed up fred dawkifl was chief and it was quite the brigade they didnt have the equipment then they do now because he always lived id the kosdmlty of the tire hall when wai growing up did developed a fondness for firemen and fire fighting equipment i was introduced lo the fire brigade when murray mcdonald was chief he recalls and i was only so high when i first lolned we met in the are hiu behind the fue truck about eight feet of space he grins and after there was a fire we strung the hose where the police station is now we had the old studebaker truck and deluge nozzles on the hose what are deluge nozzles did tells about the time the ac green plant burned and he and lleib ritchie no giants either one of us were on the business end of a hose with a deluge nozzle we just had a new truck and someone pulled the throttle on full that hose straightened out like a tree limb laughs did and herb and i were hanging about six feet above ground holding on for dear life herb said dont let go or itll baiter the few brains you have got out lots of funny things like tlut happened the veteran firefighter recalled like fires when fellows would forget to put on their pants in the excitement it wasnt till the fire was out and it got drafty that they discovered their oversight i hated fires but i enjoyed fighting them he recalls nostalgically i really enjoyed the crew i worked with they are one of the finest groups of men you can ever hope to run across he declarer where else would you get a group of men to run at the ring of a phone drop whatever they are doing and do what they can to help with no regrets hes an advocate of urging young men to join the brigade and do something for their community theres satisfaction there not only in fighting fires but in the camaraderie and working with resuscitatort he declares very few people realue that the acton brigade is equipped and trained to aid asthmatic and heart attack victims and ready to help at the drop of a hat it is comforting to see people you have helped in emergencies walking along hie streets healthy alter brushes with death by drowning or heart seizures did say yes hell men the fellows the socials and hie ores but one fire is like any other for him spare time not likely his wife will arrive home from hospital soon and did price says they have a tot of living to catch upon we are going to be busy for a while but you know he confesies with a wry grin it is a lot easier to get in the bngide than to get out wife fave i
