three years when my undo old doctor murray died i felt that there was ns good nn opening hero on anywhere else nnd i hankered after the life of i pountry doctor i found a oiisldorale mortgage on this old place of his and ive bad to keep pay- fug off that- then ms equipment was ntlrely outofdnte und here wny off from hospitals i felt there wero cer tain things i had to have and well yon know that fnrnamtown isnt very prompt in paying us bills and slnct the war a good many people have left bere to be nearer the ammunition works and tbe practice isnt so lurge as it was to begin with so you see miss margaret id like to do it but i cant i cant even promise to take s single bond not this trip id give up the pluce here entirely only somehow it seems that tho people need me t inny be called to tho front but so far it hnsnt boomed possible im putting ted through college and theres my pother who it staying to keep houie him till hes through i didnt like get exemption hut i hnd to and low would invest in thrift stamps before tbe first of the next year margaret didnt hesitate in explain ing sk long as she might had she not beard the 0wrtorseonndeneos two months before her eteusaswere much tbe same farnnmtown was lower pay than ever and thread and findings were getting higher every day what if shedldchatpfe a little mne to cover the increase if tbe ladles didnt pay till yesr after next that really didnt help so except perhaps for one or two stamps she could make no promise she would like to dls- pease with her one npprentlcs and save her small wage but idle was an odd little girl daughter of a poor widow and if margaret didnt employ her goodness knows who would snd then what would become of her if there were only something sbe could do to earn a little extra every once in a while she had heard of pes- file doing that so had the doctor and he too wished that in farnsmtown he uilcht find some simple task to per form hy which he might earn the lit tle necessary to mnko his small sub scription to government loans snd thrift stamps now they had both told each other their little predicament and somehow they felt that there was something be tween them that did not exist between tliom snd anyone olse in farnsmtown the doctor rose and as he passed the kitchen door he sniffed ever so slight ly miss margaret told him be smelted cherry jam shed just been putting 1 1 up that is why she bad to pick out the sesms so late he sniffed again pleasursbly snd then in a twinkling ahe stood beside him with a slice of her light oatmeal war bread and a lit tle saucer of fresh cherry jam to be sampled that wns bow it began thodoctor xuld he had some cherries going to waste on bis place he couldnt sell t hem and he couldnt eat them all he xraacked his lips over the sample and said he could well afford to pay a lit tle to have his cherries converted into food for next winter and that was ticw miss margaret mode arrangements to earn her bit toward buying thrift stamps it was very little but the doctor felt he wss not rash in spend ing it besides he could send some of the jars to bis mother and brother to liclp provision them as well as himself the doctor brought the baskets of cheat les in stealthily and margaret told none of the neighbors of the arrange ment and then one day when msr- uuret bad to have some repairs made on her old house there was s leak in the roof that needed soldering and there were some loose drains and one of the front stairs had grown old and sagged out of place the doctor asked her why if sbe bad to pay some one for doing the work be couldnt corns and do it himself it isnt exactly surgery bat ive always been fond of tinkering he said and that made it possible for the doctor to begin pay ments on the next bond it was the last evening of the repairs oh the sagging step which tbe doctor did by stealth to keep the secret from the neighbors as margaret bad kept hors about tbe cherry jam then not with tbe greatest fluency but with suf ficient expllcltness tbe doctor told murgaret that they blinply must unite their forces still further he didnt nsk her to marry him asbe had in tended to he simply told her that she hod to and msrgarets mind ran on ivomun fashion and predicted tbe buy ing of more stamps snd more bonds they could live in one bouse and both keen oo with their work and there would be only one furnace to keep eon led and that would make possible a real show of patriotism and tbe plan might have worked iiiiu not th announcement been mads tho very day following that poor little jariinuitown bad been chosen ss the ire for a new hospital and that doe- tor burton had been appointed one of tho resident surgeons snd that meant opportunity to do his bit aa ha had dreamed of- doing it and incidentally enough to make possible increased con signments to tbe brother snd mother nnil enough toft besides to send to ob livion forever tbo symbols of the ea tobllshment in margarofs front pew ter inspectors question as to the increased responsibility resting upon all school boards in view of the new visions arising out of the bistdry and the results of the great war so happily and victoriously at on end we hear muoh of re construction but tbe term con have lia real and worthy content only as those who are responsible for the organisation and management of our social systems give it snob in tbeir planning for the future in educational thought and ideals as well as in educational practice there will undoubtedly come new adjustments to conditions and needs whioh have been revealed to us in the experiences of the war these adjustments may radically effeot the sohools both in their curricula and in their organisation and administration with the ourricnla yon are vitally concerned though not as directly as with the organisation and management every man or woman who is char ged with educational responsibili ties owes it to his position to study the needs of the sohools today in the light of his fuller knowledge and appreciation of their impor- tance there should be tbe fullest and freest discussion upon the principles upon whioh courses of study should be based the edu cational authorities of our pro- vine should have the advantage of your thought and counsel in this matter and i am anxious that in this county there thall be tbe most intelligent consideration giv en to it i propose to call the- trustees together early in the new year in four township convention in order that they may have the opportunity of discussing questions of educational interest and their relation to them at these gather ings urban trustees will be hearti ly welcomed your most direct concern is with tbe administration of tbe sohools as bearing on this i may suggest that we must give heed to the very wide and general demand that our edqoational programmes should make larger provisions than we have made hitherto for what may be called manual vocations vocational and technical training assorts its claim along with acade mic training for professional life these olaims are not antagonistic and most not be thought of or dealt with as mutually exclusive they should be equally recognised it follows that technical and in dustrial education must be ser iously considered provision is already made in our departmental regulations for the establishment of snob courses in our publio sohools but only the larger urban centres have availed themselves of it in view of what i have said surely no argument is necessary to oonvinee you that the subjects of manual training and household 8oienee shodld receive due atten tion in your eohool to tbe great majority of our boys and girls who do not aim to enter professional life we owe at least o training i the rudiments of some equally worthy vocations among the me chanical trades in the scope of this report i can hardly enter fur ther into the details of what can immediately be demo i ask you to give this- important matter your most serious consideration i have in mind a plan by whioh tbe urban boards in the county hiay meet to disouss these questions and to hear expert speakers in connection with them if you will by resolution express your desire to have suoh st meeting called i will issue a ball for a meeting in milton of the five urban boards and will undertake to secure two excellent speakers to address you i trust that yonr in terest will be manifested to this ex tent and i am very sure that such a discussion will behighly interest ing and profitable to you please take the matter up at your next meeting snd let mo have yonr opinion faithfully yours r j mdenyes 4 f iu sttss
