and the audience bushed as she stepped close to the footughts and waited for dark ness and tbe spotlight evldenuy there was a misunderstanding at the switch board for there was a vexatious delifj about darkening the house it was oalyi a moment that she stood walking bos that moment was enougnfor ber gen- to meet that of the trombone player i and that settled it i the lights went out and tbe spoulghtj found ber bnt she stood in a trance 8he opened ber mouth but no sound came forth for the simple reason that every word and note of that very nec essary song bad fled from her brain when she recognized that face in tbe orckestra she concentrated with all her will bnt those eyes in the pit which she could not see but could feel piercing ber through and through so disconcert ed her that she was unable to appre hend the elusive words and botes horrors i she thought what if soma one fyom home were a witness iff her plight i a woman tittered foolishly and a mans guffaw followed sounds like jeff sullivan and kittle trickles she told herself this is terrible i sbe shifted her weight from her right to her left foot as peraplrankin streaked a canal through her artificial complexion she had stood in that one pose at least a week so it seemed when it suddenly dawned on her that a whisper was floating up from the or chestra pit a husky voice was re peating over and over back on tbe old plantation lives whitehaired negro man maybelle 8l clare suddenly came to herself those were the first words of ber song her mind pounced upon them and with them the tune she smued and opened her mouth once more and her great hit scored an other success after tbe show there was a little party in a nearby cafe tbe partici pants were maybelle st clare and philip warner on her bosom sbe wore a bouquet of red roses which- he bad sent aftusher to get when he re ceived tbe note telling him she wished to see blm and thank htm as sbe nibbled a chicken sandwich she remarked casually do you know philip ive changed my mind about woman suffrage i agree with you that womans place is in the home ive carved my career but im sick and tired of it all he dipped a spoon in bis coffee and sipped testily ive changed my mind too he an nounced im in favor of giving wom en the vote or anything else they want she fear that we are to stay here a month if they had named place mnsty i think it would small but we soon had the men billeted buwe were not able to arrangerhorse and wagon lines until five minureajhe- fore the column camfe down the road it was quite exciting for tbe moment for you can hardly ima gine what it wonld be like if you were not ready for them perhaps major grant being so long quarter k4jm vs m master of the some tdeev ching- m able gave me ojjdettocmtfnwe job for the trip i was glad that he was satisfied but the thought of that experience every day did not appeal to me strongly the next day the noo and i started ont for manage this was a fine town and i only wish we could have remained there instead of coming here onr officers mess there was in a chateau and it was some olaes i assure you the people of this country must be pretty tired of soldiers for every town we go to we simply take over the place so many men to each honse we put our horses in the stables and fill up every thing you can imagine yourselves in the same position at home with two or three soldiers staying for a night or perhaps two months leav ing only for a new lot to come along the people here- have of course had germans tob but were treated quite different by them than by us they were pretty siok of the boohein this country we remained at manage two nights and a day the second night we were there the people in whose chateau we were staying invited us to spend the evening with them this we gladly agreed to do we had a very uioe time and it was a welcome change from tbe sort of isolation we live in from not being able to speak freneh and understanding only a little mon sieur and madame both spoke eng lish a little and that made thing much better they had a beauti ful piano an organ and a gramo phone their music was all tbe best of the classics and madame played exceptionally well madame had been fined many times by the germans for trifling little things once 600 marks about 100 for not being courte ous to a german officer all the valuable belongings of these people had been hidden and they were just getting them back into the house people had things bidden in their gardens andevery imagin able place we loaned a wagon to the people we were with inmohs for thrte days and they brought thousands of dollars worth of be longings back to their house which they had hidden for four years where we are now i tried to rent a piano but tbe people told me it would be verydifficult toget one as the germans had taken all they possibly oould andthe- rest they smashed it will be year8 be fore this country is restored the peojpleare half starving it seems to me they have been crippled in every way all their horses machinery and rolling stock have been taken and they have an awful time to get anything to do in or- der to raise some money then prices are away out of all reach for instance a little bar of choco late at home five cents here costs forty cents and other prices in proportion in ever town they have the belgian helief which sells flourand a few of the real necessaries of life at prices that are high but not ex orbitant if one had horses here to sell he could make some money a good horse is worth 5000 to 10000 marks 1000 to 9000 it would be easy to get 200 for a mule in foot i have been offered it often the belgian horses are muoh better than the average canadian horse a single belgian horse can pull a load six mules could not move they are really wonderful tbey usually drive three in a hitob and tbe driver guides them by voice and a string attached to the bit of an outside horse but they use anything here forti team a big horse and a oow or a oow anda donkey oraponey the worst looking outfits you ever saw but they are very luoky to have even these here i left manage in the morning at 5 oolook to billet for the nejt night this time i passed through uito ia historic part pf the country n nivelles i noticed a oburoh concluded on page 4 3gj if i m il i- y f ar i- 1 ki vl j ikmmmmm yi
