the helton regiment took over the camp duties the evening before the divis ional orders had contained a sent ence substantially as follows thr lome nines will supply the camp duties tomorrow field officer ualn ouard plcquet and duty band and that order had electrified the regi ment and had tent a thrill of expec tancy throogh all ranks and pride too not without on alloy of anxiety and fear that we might not be able to ruc to a test that was great indeed when one oonildered uie inexpenence of our noncommltsloned officers it was as if divisional headquarters had said to the colonel send us three sample of your regiment a ualn ouard which will function at head quarters under the all seeing eye of major general ivor herbert the gen eral commanding the canadian mil itia and a guardsman from the im perial forces who is accustomed to having guard duties done with pre- cltlon a plcquet that will send pat rols into the town and round up de faulters and which will preserve uie good order of the division without making faux pas and without exceed ing its authority and a hand that wilt march the length of the camp at re veille retreat and first post and will play a program at the divisional offic ers uets pouring its musical strains into the fastidious ear of the staff from the guards an ear attuned to the glorious ensembles of the band or the colstreams some tettl what added to all this you will send a field officer under whose supervision these duties will function and on whom will rest the responsibility for the good order of the camp on that great day the regiment lived felt dawn taw sunset glow ho wwe kittened for reveille that morning and how we listened for the six beats of corporal bachelors drum as the band opened our day of glorious service with a march that suited us no matter what sir ivor herbert thought of it corporal bachelor did not wait for the sound of the gun acting on the principle that light travels faster than sound he watched for flash and the band was launched or at least cor poral batchelor was launched and thr band spent the time of the six beats in hurriedly getting into step and out of the path of that great animated drum which contemplated only the distance between two points a dis tance that bad to be divided by the drummers legs into thirtyinch units with one hundred and twenty of these units fitting precisely into a minute of time corporal batchelor had a remark able sense of tune he had also a re markable sense of duty when behind that monster drum and that tongue of flame that shot from the mouth of the great gun carried a voice of auth ority that brooked no hesitation i recall a march across the commons when corporal batchelor stumbltng into a great hole disappeared from view as completely as if a great hand had suddenly reached up from the nether regions and seised him drum and all but the drum did not mitt a beat and the cadence was maintain ed as accurately aa if falling into such holes was simply m matter of routine and part of the lot of the regimental drummer the band acquitted itself bravely at that first reveille and after roll call the ualn guard be came the centre of interest for on this guard each company had its representatives these were selected and the guard segregated to be put through a process of cleaning and pol ishing and drilling as a guard a pro cess that involved all the abrasives from bath brick to brass polish well as heel ball and pipe cloy and shoe polish and all the rest the plcquet passed through a aim liar process though they were not to mount in starching order as was tlic guard less the mess jin which de duction i moke for fear some captious critic might assume that i did not know the proper dress and equipment at guard mount the plcquet was to travel light uie guard heavy with all its earthly poss essions strapped to its back and im posing a burden that none but a real man can carry maybe it was this fact that centered our interest in the guard the overflow only going to the plcquet it lies in our nature to fol low uie movements of those who carry heavy loads rauwr than those who carry light in any case there is al ways someutlng appealing about lur ching order it it m butlnetitt like the dutlni mounted at retrent and after numerout ittxpectlonii which btstan with the orderly tvrtfeantn r companies and ended with tlte adjut- unt captain ooodwlllle the duties lutembled behind tw band at the htartlng point wuth of the camp preparatory to the march to divisional hcaduuiirtertt a march tliat meant m much to the regiment tim march of the rand in the carh mtirnlnu at reveille had whirled a plain of billowy canvaui over wlilch die misty thadow of night were fall ing back before the tray coaled nklr- mlthert of dawn und but for the intermittent twinkle of the cooks flren beyond the company tireeu thore wan no slim of life on the left flank on the right the quarter guards were mlently standing to armn in front of the tents and the bugleih were sound ihg revellte at retreat it was all to different and at the parade began tho company streets were filled with run ning men and the march lined with spectators who were desirous of seeing what sort of a guard the ratton regiment could turn out most of these applauded as the parade pasted but at the parade approached our nar- ude ground the regiment was assem bled holus bolus with the colonel and all the officer who came hurry ing from the mess tent at the sound of uie gun first come the band tht- long fellows stepping short and the short fellows stepping long in order to accommodate their pace to the measure prescribed by the regulations and guarded to closely by the metron omic batchelor then followed the guard and what a guard it was i with it immaculate helmets and rifle green uniforms with its rifles at the trail the privi lege accorded to rifle corps in the british service and with every detail of equipment burnished till it thorn like a diamond the plcquet followed it was the milton company intact with major ponton in command the regiment need have no fear as to the quality of its plcquet with major panton in charge and the plcquet need have no fear as to thj correct performance of all it duties for what it did not know the major was well qualified to instruct them in the plcquet wore uie glengarry cap and was unarmed save for its tide arms and thetwordi of uie officers not to mention its fists the weapons with which nature pro vided all soldiers and to which pic quets sometimes had to retort i have said that uie spectators from thr other regiments applauded but tu that parade reached our own area uie enthusiasm reached a pitch that broke into tumultuous cheering from uie helton men and the colonel madt no attempt to curb it for i know he wanted to cheer too here you are general herbert here ore uie samples you asked uie halton regiment for exhibits number one two and three what do you think of them i only know what we thought or them and of that guard marching in line with uie boy bugler marching behind stretching his stride in ordei to keep pace with the band ana worrying no doubt for fear he might get nervous and forget the notes of some of those long calls wouldnt it be terrible if the guard turned out to re ceive that hook noted general her bert and he should forget the general salute i certain the sergeant of thr guard couldnt help him out no doubt he took heart from uie cheeni of the men and his pride overcame his worries we were proud of our duties that day and on all uie days and even the setting sun looked back over his shoul der to smile his hearty approval hit rays dancing with glee on the polished instruments of the banot pointing with satisfaction to the burnished equipment of the guard and plcquet and filling tho bell of the bugle as it swung to and fro behind uie guard tul it glowed like a pot of burnished gold though uie glow of pride in uie heart of the boy that carried it wob even greater at first post of tattoo which it lialf pott nine uie band completed its tour of duty by marching over uie beaten path for uie third time and this ume it was accompanied by uie plcquet only uie ouard having moun ted at headquarters where it remain ed till relieved at retreat the follow ing day were it not for uie absence of uie guard uie parade at first pott would haver been uie climax of the days glory for even uie glorious rays of the setting tun were not seriously misted in uie generous supply of torch bearers who marched betwen uie mus icians and marked the progress of the parade through uie sea of rollicking and dancing soldier who filled uie areas all uie way to divisional head quarters over all these activities pre sided uie orderly field officer whose inspections comprehended secretary of uie association of british chambers commerce and published under the title of vouuit opportunity here are a few sayings of tome of the contributor learn to say no to yourself in matter of pleasure start early at the bottom of tlu- ladder the men who live well but nol too well get on best oil oxer tho world the future may see lads uoing into a factory for two years then to a uni versity grumbling should br kept to one self h a younv man can manage tt take aa much interest in uie business he has entered as he doe in say football cricket or motorcare then is not much fear of his troubling about wheuier the dollar will de increased or diminished the next crop of millionaire are licking our stamp now villaoe or any form of cum- munity could never be built up could never become propserous if oil the money earned by its people were to be expended outside its borders or even if a large part of it wcro thus diverted into outside channels hence it is selfevident that the more money that is spent at home the greater will be the development and prosperity of uie community not only do the wage earners need to spend their money whore they make it if they are to pro fit in uie long run but the merchants and business men must do likewise wise merchants in any village do their trading at home and thereby set a good example for the community in which they live and do business bt some villages maybe stirling mer chants have uie bad habit tit doing their trading in larger cities thereby creating distrust among their patron who will be inclined to follow the ex ample set by
