service were held in knox presbyterian church on sunday last when large congreaation had the pleasure or listening to eloquent and inspiring sormotu delivered by rev dr mackenzie principal of montreal presbyterian college in the morning after reading the bible lesson from st luke 13 chapter ur mackenide chose as hi text the 33th verse of tlie chapter vis and which of you with taking thought can add to hi stature one cubit the speaker said in part after all the knowledge we have acquired in this wonderful age of marvellous achieve ments we cannot add to our stature this is true in other things there are human limitations man has wrought wonders in conquering the air and anlhilating distances lie has given us tlie radio and the advances in all sciences medicine etc has been mar vellous wo are amoved at ourselves when we think of the things we may yet do there is a danger of getting id think we can do everything and tliat we do not need god but with all our skill we cannot add one cubit to our stature tliat remains the same this is a rude reminder and teaches us the great lesson of trust in ood who has left so many things in our hands all things are in the hands of a power higher than ourselves and we should not be too ready to assume wo can perfect everything conditions that are not as we like we can plan to work and improve them by co operation with god his spirit works in the hearts of men and teaches us tlie gospel of service we must pre serve a proper balance by the know- edge that our powers are limited and we are still dependent on god and his liolp if tills fact were realised the people would nil the churches and prayer meetings tlie reason so many ubsent themselves from the house of ood la because they overlook the fact tliat it is ood and not ourselves that has charge of things in this world borne seem to think prayer is a waste of time there are times when the fact of our own helplessness is brought nome to us there are moments when other helpers fail and comforts flee that man turns to ood in prayer why only at this time when we are con tinually dependent we are obliged whether we like it or not to trust daily in god far the very air we ureathe and life itself adversity is u test of faith when gods goodness u questioned the children of israel were warned not to forget dependence ui god and we need the same wsrur ing today we cannot dispense with ood tomorrow is in his hands the veil over the future is impenetrable to all but god alone that which may seem most secure may be snatched irom us without a moments warning rhe rich man was reminded that his wellbeing was in the hands of a high er power are we surrounded by temptation to be taunted w know that while there are things god has kept in hi own hands there are other avenue wbere no limitation u set life eternal u ours if we go freely forward in the way ood i calljng us and not try to force doors he in hi wisdom has seen fit to close ood olds us cease spending time trying to do that which he does not want he who marks the sparrows fall can be muted for the morrow we cannot increase our physielal stature but we can increase jut mental faculties with- out limit tnerv if no limit to our growth spiritually we can grow in the likeness and knowledge orofcritt life is open at the top and an are iff- vlted to ue il wh tbm ously about ourselves when we know not what an hour may bring forth what matter about toworrow when we can secure eternity nbthinsj obi separate us from the love of god do your psvt and leave the rest with god he knows your needs and all things are yours in christ in the evenng dr mackenst breach ed another splendid sermon from the text psalm 137 1st vane except the lord build the house they labour in vain that build ft sxwnt the lord the occasion of our sad bereave ment by the death of our beloved i w uw wnou aajoumeo little son floyd wuiuun hutaurlto meet at the public library in no- and mrs roy llutsv olenwiillams jvember the local council of women met at the home of mrs j w adams on fri day afternoon a tu vu the flfft regular meeting since may there was several matters to be brought up mrs j b markentte gave a i entertaining report of the meeting of the provincial council held at niagara polls in june uis lgwmo read the report of the committee appoints to examine the voters list this showedi that much time and effort hod been spent on the tame and in personal visiting of rw earners to the town and others whose names had been left off but the result was very gratiiylfff for seventy names of women voter were added to the list the playground equipment placed in different quarters o tht own a few years ago required repairs and re movals and the work was done so that everything should be available for use in the holidays expressions of ap preciation have come to the society from the townspeople and even tourists using the motor camp at the pork the work has been well worth while though it has left the treasury rather low a letter of appreciation had come from the league of nations society in canada for the work done at the time of the annual drive for membership in april by such means the alms and objects of the league are being made better understood in the smaller towns and the rural districts of the country another matter which has been the concern of the council for some time was brought to a satisfactory conclu sion by the passing of the bylaw to create a parke board with the speclsj view of placing the cemetery in good condition and providing for its cart credit u due to the committee of the council for amutanoe given in corres pondence and interviews and in gett ing the necessary petition plana for future work were iwwl while mrs adams and mrs morley served lea and thacotuull adjourned illness prevented premiers visit tiko iiilluer hon j k cooke and r l mebkien addrehh mekt1no it was dim pointed audience at tlie gregory theatre on monday af temoon when chairman samuel kirk president of the local conservative association announced tliat nine prevented premier howard ferguson being present and delivering hu ad dress as advertised he was pleased however in introduce hon j ft cooke and p g mcbrien who would substitute for mr ferguson and mr oeorge hlllmer who had represented halton in th legislature during the past temt mr hlllmef was the first speaker and spoke regarding the finances of tlie province hydro provincial coun ty and township road grants town ship school bill government liquor control etc he gave assurance that tlte government had no intention of forcing through lite township school bill in opposition to the people tliat automobile licenses would be cheaper next year that hydro rates to farmers would be reduced and the grants to township roods would be about doubl ed he believed government control lor the liquor tromc a decided improve ment over the ota and asked the electors to return the ferguson gov ernment to power on oct soth by sup porting him on election day people who had opposed him in ims were now promising him their support mr cooke who has been returned by acclamation for his home riding north hastings spoke mainly on hydro his closest interest in government af fair he stressed that while urban muni- cipollue hod to pay bock every dollar of the money loaned them for plants the rural consumer paid bock only half in this manner the government had made a gift of six million dollars to rural consumers in subsidies in past years if no bonus were paid on primary and secondary lines the rural service rate today would be e30 a month the speaker said as it woo with line subsidies the rate was um now the government we making another re duction bringing the rate down to 93m a month a low prohibiting the manufacture of liquor was suggested for ontario by mr lethbrldge progressive leader mr cooke pointed out surely he contended either the present mr jus tice roney or hon w p nickle both outstanding prohibitionists would have introduced such a measure while they were attorneysgeneral if such pro hibition was not known to be impos sible for a province he pointed out that the brewers and distillers annually paid from sixty to sixtyseven million dollars a year in taxes to the dominion government they are paying that money in or der to get the privilege of selling that liquor to a customer mr cooke stat ed and if they cant get it to the customer by legal means they will do it by illegal maansj mr mcbrlen said that the liquor control act was the best act of its kind in the dominion that while it had defects it could and would be strengthened there wore two classes of people that were dangerous he said to the cause of advanced temperance these were the fanatical wets and the fanatical fjry in carrying forward its policy of promoting sobriety and selfcontrol the government he stress ed was paying no attention to either of them the meeting was closed with the singing of the national anthem and cheers for the king premier and candidate 7 kelly aiken s the feueetlea raaeblm b orangevllte omt bound m auelph d ma celleeum ne caara sifaaviafabatr golf a very enjoyable closing wsj held
