wittier fab during the past ceoson a judging contest hex been conducted through out the different counties of ontario rim ten highest junior farmers who had not been a winner in the two competitions previous had the oppor tunity of receiving the free trip to the royal winter fair this year after everything had been so care fully planned the railroad tickets were forwurded to tlte five hundred junior farmers throughout the province and vo were advised to meet at the royal york hotel toronto on tuesday the nineteenth day of november between the hours of b30 ojh and 830 pm i arrived in toronto at 1165 ajn and from the union station was directed through the underground pas- wie to one of the largest and finest hotels in the british empire namely the royal york while registering x made the acquaintance of several young men who like myself were looking forward with great anticipa tion to the eventful week at 3 to pjn we lined up at the side of the hotel for the beginning of our trip we paraded through the streets to the parmers cooperative plant where we received a very cordial welcome by mr marsh who gave an interesting address on the construction of the historical building tlte guide then started our route through the building we were first taken into tlic creamery department where the cream was coming to by trucks where it was opened sampled weighed stirred and then dumped in to the strainers to the pssteurlsers where it is heated to 180 degrees fohrenhelt then passing through tubes it is cooled to 40 degrees fahrenhett it is then put into the huge chums in the next room where five chums are turning out one thousand pounds or butter in two and a half hours after being washed salted and vork ed it is put into the press and cut ln- u pounds it is then wrapped and packed by the pretty young ladies connected with the creamery is an ice making plant where they make twenty tons of ice every twentyfour hours we were then taken into the seed department where we saw splendid examples of seeds and the difference between good and poorly graded potatoes we then entered the egg oradlng department where the eggs were be ing packed into different grades and the cracked eggs were opened put in to polls frozen and kept for the baker next came the chicken department where we were shown the difference between the milk fed and the crate fed the picking it taking forty sec onds to pick one bird and the pack ing before leaving again for the hotel we were presented with knives from th parmers cooperative ltd wednesday morning after an ap petising breakfast at the hotel we got into the street car and proceeded to west toronto to the packing houses here we saw the slaughtering and butchering of cattle and sheep and curing and trimming of pork before it is made into lard and the smoking of the pork we next walked to the union stock yards which covers forty acres of land with another forty for future needs we marched through the yards and saw the different varieties of cattle sheep and swine mr child gave an address on the history and management of the yards at the harris abattoir we were serv ed with lunch use load official secretary of the canadian meat pac kers mr fox vicepresident of the council and others gave short ad dresses and expressed their apprecia tion of having the five hundred junior farmers with them wednesday afternoon we went to the massey harris we were first divided into groups of twenty and each group had a plant official in chart while passing through we were shown the rough wood cut into dif ferent shapes for all the modem farm machinery the shaping heat treating and the making of cultivator teeth and points the different processes of the disc making of stool wheels the culling of nuu and bolts the mould ing of the hot molten iron and the dipping of the machinery into the paint wells before being served with a wonderful cafeteria dinner we were presented with steel tape unas after a few songs and yells we were hhown a comedy nun up on the farm also an educational reel on modern machinery on modem farms mr thomas bradshaw general manager welcomed the party with an address on changes made in mach inery motor cars and the ball tele phone during the past thirty yean and also emphasized the coming of the aeroplanes mr h l gibson and mr w mo- lad die also gave snort add we were then lined up and led by tlte highlanders band to the coliseum grandstand where we watched some high jumping and a shew of delivery horses then we were lined up again and iinde an impressive junior fennera pa rude around the showring and back to our places to watch the carriage horse at 11 pm we again left for the hotel thursday morning we visited the t eaton co ltd mall order the largest in the british empire in the the t eaton co ltd acted as chair- man the trophies and medals were pre sented to the judging competition winners under the direction of mr r n duncan hon w p finlayson minister of land and forest outlined the traduction annually of his indus- trlen and sounded the challenge to the north to the young men seeking great farming career hon john h martin minister of agriculture gave a short address muyor samuel mcbrlde expressed the point or working toward a definite goal prof a r christie of the oac was the chief speaker and stressed the jtrulue of education and the wonderful dpiwrtuntty the oac was to the junior farmer the t eaton co are presenting fifteen scholarships of one hundred dollar each towards a two year course at guelph college and mr uarun added that the winners tuition fee might be omitted friday morning we had the privilege or visiting the parliament buildings and sitting of the legislature room we were also shown through the build ing before leaving we had our photo token at the main entrance we were next taken on a sightsee ing tour through the city by the t t c motor buses we went first to the universities through the residen tial section of rosedale to sir henry pellatts castle torontos future busi ness section the working mens down to sunnyilde and back to the royal winter fair after lunch at coles the afternoon was spent watching the judging of heavy horses and dairy cattle in the evening we watched the high jumping carriage and saddle classes the exhibit of the canadian royal dragoons and most interesting of all the maritime provinces showing their pleasureseeking grounds apple fun and the wonderful parade of their dairy cattle we also seen the four- horse teams from different companiea throughout canada abaturday morning after breakfast
