but in all points certainly they were not so abstemious as the greeks it is also true that no ascetic could find fault with the billets with their resonant hardwood floors which served to amplify the sounds that emanate from a barracks when sleep natures soft nurse waves her magic wand and begins the process of knitt ing up the ravelled sleeve of care the same ascetic would also enthuse over the ollverrnjjjjttientas an instru ment of seii torture which the sol dier carried with the fortitude or tc martyr and a cast of features sug gesting those of skdbad the sailor as he stumbled along with the old man of the sea on his back there was plenty to eat and there was plenty to drink for there were many- wells of hospitality in- the town in those days to which the soldier if he choose could repair to drown whatever sorrows he might have though the complete submergence of fthe afore mentioned oliver equipment seemed to be the objective of some of those hardy warriors then the hospitality of the town of georgetown was given without stint finding expression in the many kindnesses official as well as individual painting a picture on the memory that was to many in cne years to come like cool water to a thirsty soul i am sure reeve fleck and his coun cil wore out many tires in their ef forts to administer to the wants of the detachment and the recollection of c c roe and hlfl nnfait at tention and solicitude left a deep im pression on all the officers and men there were many visitors many ex- commandlng officers and many boys in their late teens who in a short time would be following the same path of glory that in many cases led but to the grave there were many detachments from first of along line of inspectors- many- great soldiers and celebretles have passed tlown their ranks since those days and all were well pleased with what they saw general alder- son sir horace smith dorien lord kitchener and greatest of all his majesty king george lord roberts looked us over on sails- bury plains and did us the great hon our of waiving a frail old hand in our direction a hand that in other days bad so often indicated the way to victory that was a very informal in spection but inspirational for every one in the battalion took it as a per sonal compliment from britalns great est soldier within two weeks he had contracted pneumonia and had passed away within sound of the guns that thundered their defiance to on enemy against whom within a year he had warned the empire the inspection of sir sam hughes at valcartler was thote than an in spection itwas an episode and one the battalion and the minister of multla for many weeks to come but more of this latter besides were in the army now and such little dif ference do not endure as they do in civil life we have referred to he battle hon- hmnohrie3f we sna now introduce you to a few of these men who in the years to come will wear small discs of bronze un der a permit system there need be little surprise at the change the sale of native wine without permit or license which incidentally was also permitted under the ontario temper ance act has undoubtedly been a most important factor in promoting intem perance in ontario consumers have been able to buy large quantities of wine the easy conditions of purchase facilitating excessive drinking and undoubtedly a certain amount of boot legging and when it is realized that the alcoholic content of native wine i often runs from 24 to 30 proof spirits it can readily be seen that this bever age figures frequently in breaches of the liquor control act it was always a mystery why the sale of such a potent drink should have been allow ed under the old prohibition act and its continuance under the present system when the abuses it led niust have been known to the oovamment has been equally puzzling a permit svbtcnr would gjy the aiithnrlflaw step up y4yr energy a the proposed amendment would seem to be xhoroughly justified erin
