dale canadian mgdkad assoc toxoid and diphtheria prevention wben towards the end of the last century diphtheria antitoxin was dis covered we were given a specific cure for diphtheria whenanuloxinii5 ad ministered in sufficient dosage during the first day of- the- illness it practical ly assures the recovery of the person who is 111 diphtheria antitoxin is the substance which the body produces to counter- act the poison or toxin which the wlur diphtheria germs give off time to produc and that is why the antitoxin which has been produced in the horse is injected so that there may- not be any time when there la not a sufficient amount of antitoxin present in the body to overcome the toxin in spite of our having this specific cure deaths from diphtheria continu ed to occur the number was greatly reduced but the disease was far from being controlled the explanation for this was that for various reasons the antitoxin was not being given early enough to prevent the damage done by the toxin we ytere thus in the position of knowing how to cure a dis ease which however continued to cause many deaths because tberemedy- was npt being used goon enough to bring about a cure- it was evident that if diphtheria were to be controlled it would be necessary to be able to give protection against the disease berore it made its attack if the human body while healthy could be made to produce antitoxin as u- did wben attacked by the disease and so be prepared in advance then the disease would not occur this is the very thing which diphtheria toxoid does we stated that the poison given off by the diphtheria germ is called dip htheria toxin it has been found prac tical to treat this toxin in a certain manner so that it loses its poisoning or toxoic powers and yet retains its ability to stimulate the body to pro duce antitoxin this altered toxin is called toxoid toxoid because it has lost its toxic power is harmless it isinjected in to the body three doses are given at certain intervals and after a period of time the person injected is protect ed or immunised against diphtheria in a small percentage of persons one or two additional injections are need ed as some individuals off not respond aswell as others the immunity gained in this way lasts for years if not for a lifetime toxoid has been widely used with per fect results and it can be recommend ed without reservations it should be given early in life because diphtheria notice to creditors in the matteat at the estate of georgma kltaahath thompson tale of the tpwn of georgetown in the xjoanly of notice
