the secondary schools of burlington milton oakvule oruunher for advanced class georgetown watfardown and acton chamber ror advanced class m m halton count mrs thomas steele one ol the pioneers of georgetown mrs ttios steele passed away tn win- dsor lriday ocuioer 3rd mrs steele was uui eldest daughter of the late samuel creech when a diild of seven slie moved witli her lather and motlier to farquharson windsor georgetown oct 7 l930 council met with mayor mackehsle hi the chair and councillors bessey cleave cummlngs davis and parr present mr foulls asked council for use of council in first aid womens request grant ed except first tuesday in month they to have other tuesdays in each month for ten weeks wm glllman addressed council re milk bytaw messrs williams and sargent ad dressed council re payment for work done on ontario street mr jos gibbons addressed council re early closing bylaw for barbers communications were received from mr j a wllloughby lawson a strat- ton w school students at county meet womens institute the regular meetuig of tne george- town womens institute was held on wednesday last at the home ol mrs a ri relfer about lorty ladles beuig present after the opening exercises the mill utes of the previous meeting were read and approved a hearty vote of thanks was tendered to the members wlio had contributed to the homebaking sale at the fair to those who had gathered up the donations and to those in charge of the sale four of the members mrs braisby mrs cave mrs mcmenemy and mrs erwln each donated five dollars to the cemetery gate fund this sum being the proceeds from a social evening held in each home mrs erwln gave the report of the local needs committee various items of business came up for discussion it was decided to hold an old time dance in the arena on oct 24th and committees in charge were appointed the president of the halton county institute mrs h a cartwrlght of milton was present at this- meeting as was also the district secretary mrs p w merry of hornby following the business items mrs cartwrlght gave a brief address commendulg the georgetown branch for its splendid re cord and its worthwhile work and urging upon the members the need for their support in girls work she stress ed the value of the judging competi tions put on by the department and reminded her hearers that halton girls this year took second place at the cne she also bespoke the support of this branch in making the 3rd an nual girls conferensce to be held in milton in the earjvsjprlng as success- mrs feller then sang a delightful solo miss wase playing her accom panlmenl mrs merry in her remarks also paid a high tribute to the work carried on by the georgetown branch after describing some of the difficulties en countered by some of the smallei branches she concluded with a few words on crnld training a subject to which she has given special study mrs a deverealix who was the second president of the georgetown branch and also n past district presi dent then made a few fitting remarks two new members were welcomed at this meeting one mrs r j mccabe being the former president of the tottenham womens institute a dainty lunch contest the onlv remaining event the pole vault this was postponed be cause df darkness walter richardson won first place in the intermediate high jump and sec ond place in the hopstep and jump df the same division in the girls events bessie walker finished secondm the open hopping race and was a member uf the junior relay team which finished second elizabeth bans than oame second in the hejtetball several ose finishes jim ritchie the diminutive runner show ed pluck and perseverance in the mile race when jus flnal sprint made him finish though considerably behind tne winners jim win do better next time two years ago tne locals came last in the county meet last year they came second last and this year in spite of waterdowns entering the group they finished third last with a sub stantial lead aver wauaoo and acton this progress seems encourag ing the lack of a gymnasium consid erably handicaps th local athletes in as much as practice for the events is possible only in tne outdoors- under favorable weather conditions a good spirit prevailed among the students drawn from the various schools indicating that they how to win quietly and accept defeat gracefully a goodnatured rivalry cooks acci dent and that their hired man was rushed to guelph hospital to be oper ated on for appendicitis we hope that they will have a speedy recovery the united church people decided to have a friday evening october 3rd an enjoyable evening was spent by all the social opened wilh a favourite song followed by nutny games readings were given by miss sarah slandish miss elizabeth bona than and mr pat engh mr gilbert english sang a solo while two junior members favored with a duet musical numbers were given by mr h huntly and mr c evans a special feature of the evening was the pres entation number of forty paid a frater nal visit to campbell lodge camp beuvlile and put on the first degree av the close of the lodge they were entertained at a banquet followed by a toast list it was a most
